BSE Bear Bulletin

March 6, 2023
Dear Families,
Across the nation, people celebrate the achievement and history of African Americans as part of Black History Month each February. March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month which began in 1987 when President Ronald Reagan declared Proclamation 5613 to increase "public awareness of the needs and the potential of Americans with disabilities" and to provide the "encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential." (National Disability Institute). March also marks Women's History Month as a time to celebrate women's contributions to society and history. At Brooks School, we do not just focus this learning and celebration for just one month. Students read and learn about individuals who are like and different than them throughout the entire year.
In the state of Indiana, March also kicks off standardized testing. Beginning this week, all Indiana third graders will take the IREAD -3 test. In April, our BSE 3rd and 4th graders will take the ILEARN tests. The learning and preparation begins in kindergarten. Each year, students learn and grow. Their learning builds upon the year before. The BSE staff believes that we all support and impact a child's learning from day one in kindergarten and a child's success builds each year.
This Friday, March 10th, marks the end of quarter 3. Report cards will be posted and made available in Skyward to all families next week. Please review the report card with your child as this allows them to build their understanding of how they are held accountable for their learning and work.
Next Monday, March 13th is a Flex Day for all HSE schools. This Flex Day was built into the HSE calendar in the event there would be a snow day. If you recall in February, school was in session on Tuesday, February 21st as it was a Flex Day that was used to make up for the snow day in January.
The school will be closed on Monday, March 13th, and school will resume on Tuesday, March 14th.
Attendance is a key factor in a child's success at school academically, socially, and emotionally. Arriving on time also increases the chances for your child to have a smooth start to the day. Every day at BSE, a lot of students are arriving late to school. Please adjust morning routines so that your child can arrive to school on time.
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs. Kussy and Mr. Hoog
IREAD-3 Testing for Third Grade
Next week on Tuesday, March 7th and Wednesday, March 8th all BSE third graders will take the required IREAD-3 test. All third grade families received a message through Parent Square with explanation and details about the assessment.
At BSE our third graders are ready to show what they know as readers and thinkers. Please support your child with words of encouragement, confidence, a good night's sleep, healthy breakfast, and a fully charged iPad.
To prep your child's iPad for this assessment, we need you to to download the "Secure Test Browser" app. The app can be found here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/airsecuretest/id607002517. Please install this app on your 3rd grade student's iPad this weekend. If you have a rental iPad or you enrolled your BYO iPad into our Manger system, we will automatically push this app to your child’s iPad.

Arrival, Tardies, Attendance and Dismissal
Car Rider Dismissal:
- Car riders will begin dismissing promptly at 2:05pm. Please make sure you are in the line to pick up your students no later than 2:05pm. This will help ensure that everyone gets picked up in a timely manner and no students are left waiting.
Arrival and Tardies:
- Please use caution while entering and exiting the lot to drop off students. Do not go around vehicles unless directed by the BSE staff. Student, parent, and staff safety are our number one priority at arrival.
- The school day starts promptly at 7:40am. Please make sure that your child is in the building by 7:35am to ensure they can get to their classroom in time. If your child is a car rider and you arrive after 7:40am you will need to walk your child in to the building and sign them in. Please make every effort to have your child to school on time!
- If your child will be tardy due to an appointment, please call them in to the attendance line before the start of the day. This allows us to notify teachers and make the approiate adjustments.
- If your child will be absent for the day please call the absence in to the Attendance line before the start of the school day.
- If your child has an appointment during the day and will need to leave early please call this in to the school. Please do not mark this in School Dismissal Manager. School Dismissal Manager is only to be used for end of day transportation, not early dismissal.
- If your child will be participating in a club or after school activity please make sure you are changing this in School Dismissal Manager for the approiate days. If a childs dismissal is not updated we will send them home according to their setting for that day.
