Thank you!
Thank you to everyone for all of their hard work in preparing for Parent/Teacher conferences! We have many classrooms that already have 100% attendance. I know parents appreciated the opportunity to learn more about what their child was doing in the classroom. I also hope that you were able to create even greater partnerships as we continue to work together for their student. Please continue to work to have any remaining conferences. After you have tried, if you still need help from the office, please let us know. The expectation is that every room has 100% participation.
Potential Must Do for students who are Emerging Bilinguals
Tori recorded a quick video explaining the expectations for use of the BrainPop Must Do. Within this quick 5 minute video she will show you were to access the 3 column vocabulary chart and she walks you through how to use the chart with students. Take a look!
Scaffolding for ESL
Every student in our ELL program has a learning designation based on their ELPA test results: Emerging, Progressing, Proficient. We know that based on those designations AND where each student is in their language acquisition, students need their learning scaffolded. There are a number of strategies you can use.
Here are some examples of that you might use for students who are emerging:
Modeled Sentences (oral and written)
Sentence Stems for output
Graphic organizers for note taking
Three column chart for vocabulary
Vocabulary personalized dictionary
Graphic organizers for structuring writing
Writing frames
Extended time on assignments/assessments
Assignments & (non Reading) assessments read aloud by fluent English speaker
Processing in L1 (oral, written, input by spoken)
If you would like additional information, please let me know. We want to ensure that our students have the supports they need upfront. Some times, students might be "just sitting" because they are trying to figure out the task. Remember, verbal directions for many students are often not enough.

Reminders:
Our Roadrunner is slowing down. We need to keep him moving. Remember, we should still be in the phase of handing out tickets, tickets, tickets! We should be having an all school reward by the end of October if not sooner.
The Lunch Room trophies are going fairly well. There are some lunches that are still a bit of a challenge. We have some students intentionally trying to get their table to not have a green cup. Thank you for your efforts to instill lunchroom expectations. Please continue reteaching where it is necessary. Classrooms will need to earn at least 4 trophies this week to earn free seating on Friday.

Roadrunners on the move! We will use the football field to help us with this event. We will line up outside on our recess lines ready to go at 2:30. Mr Schemmel and Mrs. Verzal's class will lead us over to begin our walk. We will walk around the football field 6 times to equal 1 mile.
Staff that participate will have their names turned in to Jo Ann for the prize drawing. Per the email from Kim Smith, ...."UnitedHealthcare has awarded the Sioux City Community School District a wellness budget that will be used to purchase participation prizes, registration fees, and wellness education. This budget will allow for three participation drawings at each location. We will also have two grand prizes for a 30 minute massage."
