FMS Counseling: Mrs. Burfield, Mrs. Horstmeier & Ms. Jo

Needing to see the school counselor?

Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chrome books by clicking on the apps button. This form comes only to the counselor's. 6th graders will learn how to use this app on Tuesday, August 27th when counselors meet with them through their ELA classrooms. You can also ask your teacher for help. If you can't locate the form you can also shoot your school counselor an email. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be sent to the Counselors Office immediately. This is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time .

Here are a few ways you can reach out to us in the FMS Counseling Office:

Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-J and can be reached at shorstmeier@fulton58.org and Mrs. Burfield works with students with a last name starting with a K-Z and can be reached at cburfield@fulton58.org.

Ms. Jo is the Counseling Office secretary and can be reached at jwilliamson@fulton58.org.

Counseling Office phone number is 573-590-8208

Talk to your student about E-Cigs, VAPS and Juuls

As we see this epidemic in our own community and country while targeting our student population we want to share some talking points with parents and an informative video as well.

AFTER SCHOOL CHOIR HAD A GREAT FIRST REHEARSAL! We have learned almost ALL of our first concert piece! We will ultimately plan to sing 4 songs on the choir concert in December. I'm so proud of our after school choir for learning most of the first piece in just one rehearsal! Rehearsals are on Tuesdays after school until 4:15!

Music 6: This week we started learning about Jazz! We read the book "Acoustic Rooster" in class together. Students were able to choose a jazz musician to learn more about. Our choices were: Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Billie Holiday. We will continue talking about jazz next week!

Arts Alive: It is all Disney all the time in Arts Alive right now! We are working diligently to learn our music so that we can begin choreography by October 1st!

Choir: We have been working on all 4 of our concert pieces for the October concert! I hope you are ready to emjoy A Musical Mosaic on Monday, October 28th! That is our firt concert for the year. It is at 7pm at Southside Baptist Church. Students will be expected to arrive earlier. More details soon!

CONCERT ATTIRE: khaki pants, black shoes, and a black choir polo shirt. If you do not have one, you may purchase one from me for $15. These polos are the same as those worn by FMS choirs for the past several years. Students may certainly borrow or buy one from a student who was in FMS choirs and no longer needs the polo.

All bands kicked off our annual Fulton Band Boosters Cherrydale Fundraiser on Wednesday! The money raised goes to the Band Boosters to help supplement the band budget. Order forms and money are due Tuesday, Oct., 8. Checks should be made out to Fulton Band Boosters. Donations are also always accepted. Thanks to all for your support!

6th Grade Band: For those who haven't gotten a band book yet, we play out of Essential Elements for Band, Book 1. Please feel free to contact a director if you have any questions about what book to get.

Students have learned how to assemble and disassemble their instruments and have learned 3 notes. Next week we should know enough notes to play our first full song. I have included a video of the woodwinds first note (It's unlisted so you can only see it through this link). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTPdHhiTOEU

7th Grade Band: The band is beginning preparations for their concert on October 29th. They should be getting their second piece next week.

8th Grade Band: Homecoming is the big day! The 8th Grade Band has done a phenomenal job with their marching and playing! We will get back to FMS from the parade around 4:00 pm. Kids will need to be at the high school at 5:00 pm for dinner, a quick practice, and then the game!

Guitar Classes: Students are improving their technique and will be moving towards performing full songs soon.

Please consider following me on Twitter @MrT_FPSBands. I will be providing a daily playlist which your students will hear when they enter the room. You may also email me at chthomas@fulton58.org.

News from the Art Room

Hello and greetings!

I am glad to be back in the classroom again!

This week we will be reviewing classroom practices and procedures since I have been gone, and we will be looking at assignments, and projects we have ongoing. We will look at where we are at, and move into more concentrated objectives.

6th Grade

ELO3

Students will continue to select and use the Elements and Principles of Art and Design

We will work together and discuss some of the fundamentals of drawing and design work and look at optical art.

We will move rapidly into our next projects to make up for lost time.

Students will begin optical line drawings this week using the Elements we discussed in class. Students will incorporate Line, Value and color shading techniques from what they have learned.

Students last week moved into our next objective ELO5 We looked at the connections between visual arts and other core subjects.

Students are studying Optical Lines and the importance of light. Continuing our look at value in art.

7th Grade Semester

ELO2

Students will use subject matter and themes in Artwork

Students will be continuing work on their Illuminated Letter Designs. We may have to reassess where we are at and start some new drafts of this project so we are hitting all the key points.

Students will shift into the next project phase of this unit by creating graffiti walls to demonstrate creative font as well as theme.

Students will wrap up their Graffiti Walls this week, and we will swiftly Move into our next objective:

Students will analyze and evaluate art by creating mini posters in study of the Principles and Elements of Art. Students will select a Principle or Element to become an expert on and design an informational poster on their choice and share with the group.

8th Grade Semester

Students will be finalizing their Surprise lockers this week.

ELO2

Students will use subject matter and themes in artwork.

Students will continue work on their surprise lockers and we will take a look at where we are at in that process. We will use the next week to evaluate understanding of the concepts, and make sure we are on task with the assignment. We will look at moving to our second unit as soon as we wrap up on this first objective. Some of us may have to do revisions and a second final draft.

Students this week in the semester course will turn their attention to our new objective

ELO4

Students will explain the connections between art and the world around them.

This unit we will look at a few different paintings but will focus on Grant Woods American Gothic. Students will learn about Grant Woods Painting, and create a parody or modern telling of this work. Coined as one of the most spoofed paintings in American Art, Grant Woods somber depiction of American Life was originally panned by critics but was later praised in its depiction.

Students will learn about the parts of a portrait and begin making steps in creating portraits to scale with adding a structure of a foreground, middle ground and background.

8th Grade All Year

Students will be finalizing their lockers this week.

ELO2

Students will continue work on their surprise lockers and we will take a look at where we are at in that process. We will use the next week to evaluate understanding of the concepts, and make sure we are on task with the assignment. We will look at moving to our second part of this unit as soon as we wrap up on this first objective. Some of us may have to do revisions and a second final draft.

The All year class will generally have multiple assignments covering the objective in different ways. We may shift focus in mediums, or application processes to meet the same objective as time allows us. Generally there will be skill-building assignments that surround a centralized project that will measure what the students have gained in skill development.

Students this week will begin work on a three part project that is thematically geared around trees. Students will learn and apply various media practices for one centralized theme.

As always, if you have any questions, or concerns please don’t hesitate in contacting me through email at cchapman@fulton58.org

The FMS Thrive Hive

The Fulton Middle School Thrive Hive opened for business on Monday, August 21st. The store is open 7:25 to 7:45 each morning. If students aren't able to shop then they can email Mrs. Horstmeier @ shortmeier@fulton58.org or Mrs. Yates @ hyates@fulton58.org for an appointment to shop.

Any age appropriate toys, DVD's for the holidays.

As we gear up for winter: Hats, gloves, scarves, and coats.

Snack items: Nutella snack packs, Slim jims and pop tarts.

Other needs are ear buds and water bottles.

We will be gearing up for the holiday season so baskets to make gift packages for students to purchase would be great.
