Birth-Age 2


  • Even in birth, children differ in temperament
  • Temperament is quality/intensity of emotional reactions
  • Passivity is how active a child is
  • Kids differ in levels of irritability
  • A well as the tendency to feel stressed
  • Activity patterns\levels of movement also differ


  • Attachment is a strong emotional bond
  • Several early attachment behaviors are shown
  1. cooing
  2. kicking
  3. gurgling
  4. laughing
  • They do this because they grow attached to certain people
  • Separation anxiety is an attachment behavior as well
  • This happens when a childs caregiver leaves

Changes over time

  • Many changes occur after birth
  • Your actions will affect them
  • Establishing trust is a key factor

Birth to three months

  • Not very refined emotions
  • Excitement/Stress are shown
  • Excitement is shown by
  1. Smiling
  2. Looking Alert
  3. Wiggling
  • They show stress by crying

Three to Six Months

  • Child responds to people
  • They Make Happy sounds
  • Crying is still used to show distress
  • Children start to use different cries to signal different things

Six To Twelve Months

  • They become actively involved
  • They make sounds in response to others
  • They also begin to develop fear
  • By this stage they have developed attachment to caregiver
  • Separation anxiety starts to show

Twelve To Twenty-Four Months

  • Children will in this stage show anxiety about something that might happen
  • they become more interested in exploring
  • They still fear things that they don't know
  • Children start to take interest in other children
  • They like to play NEXT to other children
  • They become aware of their ability
  • They LOVE saying no
