Reflecting on the past week...

We hope that everyone had a wonderful and rest-filled Christmas break and that you are fresh and ready for the second semester!

Thanks to all who participated in our Secret Santa event during the last week of school! It really made everyone get into the spirit of giving, and lessened the stress of exam week! (It was a lot of fun too!)

Changes Around the School

You might notice a change in the building when you walk in on Monday! All of our lighting has been changed out for more efficient LED lighting. This lighting is more efficient and will ultimately provide a savings to Marian's expenses. There was also additional work done on the building as we complete the repairs from our lightening strike. Hopefully all will be back in order very soon!

Wrapping Up Semester 1 Exams

As we left for break back on December 20, most of the teachers had already completed their grade meeting with administration. Although there are several students who have outstanding exams due to a variety of reasons, many of them have been making them up over the two days that the office was open during break. If you have a student who needed to make up an exam, you may find the completed exam in your mailbox when you return. Please grade the exam and update the gradebook, including re-submitting, then make sure that you contact Ms. Novy via email and/or the grade change form to make sure that everything has been completed. Teachers only have until 8am Wednesday to make those changes in the gradebook yourself, otherwise, you MUST submit a grade change form provided in the Exam Procedures packet after Jan. 8 at 8am.

What's coming up?

Welcome to 2020 and second semester! Fresh starts, new curricular topics to teach, and even a few new faces! Here's to a productive, positive, and blessed second semester!

Second Semester Senior Exemptions

A helpful reminder as we step into a new semester... this is a great time to refresh your expectations in your classroom, make sure both the Marian Central and your own classroom policies and procedures are clear to students, as well as the consequences. For seniors in particular, their behavior, attendance, and grades have a bigger impact coming into second semester as they are all working towards second semester exam exemptions. Please click here to review the expectations of this privilege so you can answer any questions a senior might have on their ability to qualify within your class.

Rachel's Challenge Assembly 1-15-20

To support you in your efforts to build a strong culture of support, acceptance, and meaningful relationships, we are very excited to bring the Rachel's Challenge back to Marian Central! We have had this presentation in years past and it has always proven to have a positive and powerful impact on our students and staff alike. If you have never heard of this program, feel free to view this informational site & video (bottom right of screen) about Rachel's Challenge. The assembly and event will take place on Wednesday, January 15. The first assembly will be at 8:15 am in the auditorium with our 9th & 10th graders. The 11th & 12th graders will attend the assembly in the auditorium at 10:00 am. Please click here for the special bell schedule.

To prepare for this special day, we will begin this Wednesday's Late Start in the cafeteria at 7:30 am to talk about what to expect and how to prepare for the day, as it will be a very emotional day for everyone. We will be following up that evening with a parent program that will share Rachel's Challenge with the Marian families so that we can all develop the same mindset about how to frame our culture to be one of love and acceptance. Thank you ahead of time for supporting these efforts.

Late Start is this Week!

Speaking of this week's Late Start, please click here for the agenda. Please also be aware that while your teams are meeting in your PLCs, the Department Heads will be working with you to finalize decisions on the 2020-21 curriculum offerings, text and technology needs, and staffing considerations.

I hope that you all have a wonderful first week back and we can all continue to work together for the good of Marian Central, and all those who are touched by this wonderful community.

Did You Forget your GCN Training?

This is just a gentle reminder that all Staffulty members are to complete this year's set of online training session in order to stay in compliance with Illinois state mandates for schools.

As shared back in August, all trainings must be completed no later than April 1, 2020.

If you have already completed your trainings, thank you for being so pro-active! If you have not, please print out the Certificate of Completion once you have completed all of your designated trainings.

If you need assistance logging into your account, please contact Ms. Novy.

Reminders of some Concerning Student Activity

We as a Staffulty know that we need to work together to ensure that the Marian Central environment is safe and appropriate for all. Unfortunately we have had several complaints about the "unequal" treatment of students with regards to enforcing school rules and expectations. It is for this reason I have compiled a quick list to remind everyone of some of the frequent "infractions" that need to be enforced more consistently...

- Student Uniforms: No sweatshirts or other items (besides the Marian fleece) are allowed to be worn over the school uniform. Students should only be wearing the Marian Uniform.

- Accessories: Girls are not allowed to have any piercings (like nose piercings) besides on their ears. Boys should always be clean shaven with clean, neat haircuts above the ears.

- Absolutely no food or drinks (besides water) is to be consumed in class or in the hallways. This includes Dunkin' or Starbucks "coffees." We want to keep the "creepy crawlies" to a minimum!

Many of these issues can be curbed very easily while greeting students as they enter your classrooms. Simply requesting that they take care of the particular issue before entering your class will eliminate wasted instructional time or disagreements.

>>>VAPING>>> We have had numerous reports that students are vaping not only in the bathrooms, but in the classrooms! How, you ask? It has been reported that students will hide the vape in their sleeve or a tissue and, since many vape materials no longer emit a plume of smoke or vape, a teacher may not notice this in your classroom. The best ways to curb this behavior is to keep students actively involved in the classroom activities you provide and continuously move around the room while delivering a lesson or monitoring student learning. We are hoping that if you are aware that this is happening in the classrooms that you will keep your eye open to these behaviors.

Please know that Administration is more than happy to assist you in these matters.

When we are all delivering a consistent message to our students, we will see an improvement in the overall culture of the school. Thank you for all you do to support the expectations of the school.
