The Gower Gazette
Week 28- April 5, 2019
In The Classroom...
This week we focused on summarizing (what a big word for first graders)! We learned that summarizing means to tell the short version of a story. We practiced this skill with our story, Jack and the Beanstalk. Each day we shared what happened in our story from the beginning with only sharing the important parts that would change the story if not included. The kids are getting the hang of this.
Your children are becoming authors! Most have finished planning their fairy tale and are now in the writing process. There's lots of creativity happening. I cannot wait to share these with you at the end of the year!
In Math, we continued working on double digit addition and I introduced double digit subtraction as well. We compared an addition problem to a subtraction equation and had a great conversation on how to solve these. We will continue to work on these problem types next week.
Science has been so fun lately! The kids really enjoy the rock unit. We have an experiment we're working on with unwashed sand and water. This has to sit for several days, but the kids are excited to see what will happen in their vials. Our big question.... Is sand the smallest type of rock? Today the kids got to look at my fossil collection which they thought was super cool.
We have also been exploring different topics that your child will see at the museum next week. So far we learned about dinosaurs, seatbelt importance (crash test), different habitats, and tornadoes.
Today we had a Skype in Tennessee with the Elephant Sanctuary where we learned about African and Asian elephants and how the sanctuary is helping them. It was pretty cool to see these creatures moving around.
As you can see it's been a busy, but fun week with lots of learning. Please, please, please be sure to read the Notes section with important info about our field trip and other events. I don't want you to miss out on anything.
I hope you all have a great weekend. It is supposed to be beautiful!
Take Care,
Ms. Gower

NOTES~
- Field Trip- Next week is our Field trip. You will receive a reminder letter in your child's homework folder on Monday with LOTS of information. Be sure to read it. Don't forget that we will be back to school after buses run so someone will need to be at the school to pick your child up at 4:30. We will be wearing our class shirts on the trip so the kids will need to come to school with a comfortable undershirt to wear underneath. I will be collecting the shirts afterwards so that we can wear them again for field day. They will get to keep them after field day.
- Report Cards- These came home today! Check your child's Friday Folder. Look over them and let me know if you have any questions and don't forget to sign the envelope and send it back on Monday.
- No RED Envelope- Your child will not have his/her RED envelope again until after track out! Homework will be limited since it's getting closer to our break.
- Field Day Volunteers- Mrs. Roberson needs help for field day. She does not have enough parent volunteers for our track. If you are able to help please let her know through email. Her email address is: anroberson@wcpss.net.
- Easter Eggs- We have gotten some in already. Many thanks!! Please don't forget to send in 24 or more eggs for our Easter Egg hunt. The more eggs we have the more fun it is for the kids. I also need volunteers to hide the eggs on Wednesday the 17th. Let me know if you can do that at 12:45.
- Google Training- I have a Google Training on Wednesday and will be out. Mrs. Whitney will be subbing for me. Please be sure to contact the main office at the school if you need anything as I will not be able to forward any messages during my training.
WSES- Embracing the needs of every child!
