The Dog Ear

News and Notes from the North Mianus Media Center

The Parent Edition...September 2013

Dear Parents,

We are so excited about the opportunities your children will have this year:

  • Our program will continue to promote the best of children's literature;
  • We will continue our quest to get all kids hooked on reading and to help them find the same joy we do in a good book;
  • More than 400 new books will be added to our collection this year;
  • Computer skills are taught at each grade level and are specifically suited for students' developmental needs;
  • From the moment the kids walk through the door we will stress good digital citizenship and responsible use of technology; our mission is to make sure your child makes good decisions when using technology and the Internet;
  • E Books are available; please call us and we'll set up a time for you to stop by to learn the ins and outs;
  • Our online catalog, Destiny can be found here: https://gps.follettdestiny.com/; students in grades 3-5 will be receiving a refresher course on how to use it and how to check their own accounts; if you too would like to know, let us know and we'll arrange for a quick lesson;
  • Type to Learn is available for home use; directions can be found here: http://www.greenwichschools.org/page.cfm?p=10848
  • Borrowing books is a great way to build independence and responsibility. Please help us by encouraging your child/children to return their books on their own and on-time (our loan period is two weeks);
  • We will be celebrating too - keep an eye on The Preview and future editions of The Dog Ear for what's happening in the Media Center;
  • If you need to use the Media Center for a meeting, please contact Sue Belmonte to reserve space. One morning a week is put aside to help accommodate parent meetings though we do try and be flexible when possible;
  • If you would like to volunteer in the media center please let us know. We'd love to have you.

We are excited about the year and are committed to making the media center your child's favorite place to be.
