St Brigid's Response to Cyclone Gabrielle
After a number of conversations held with students and letters received over the last week, SBS students have identified a range of initiatives to support those affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.
We have decided to take action in the following ways:
We will be supporting two Catholic Schools in Napier - St Patrick's and Reignier. We have students who have connections with people at both of these schools.
- On Friday 3 March, we will have a black and white non-uniform day and bring a gold coin donation organised by Team Whā.
- On Friday 3 March, we will have a SBS coin trail in the shape of a heart on the big courts organised by Team Rua.
- Throughout this week students are invited to bring cans of food organised by ROOM 5 who will build a can tower outside their classroom.
- We are currently making cards for the children of the two Catholic Schools.
I will be purchasing vouchers with the funds raised for shops such as Farmers and The Warehouse. The cards, cans and vouchers will be collected by the CEO of Composting NZ who is travelling regularly to the Hawke's Bay to check on his team. The donations will be delivered to the St Patrick's and Reignier School Principals to distribute to those in need.
Thank you so much for supporting our tamariki to take action. We are looking forward to Friday's initiatives and our response to those in need.
He taonga rongonui te aroha ki te tangata - Goodwill towards others is a precious treasure.

Upcoming Teacher Paid Union Meetings
Whakamana tamariki, whakamana kaiako
We all want the best for our kids.
Our teachers love what they do, but not enough funding for schools means that they don’t have the time they would like to support all kids to thrive.
We can fix this though. NZEI Te Riu Roa primary teacher and principal members are making the case to the Government for the best investment in tamariki. Smaller class sizes, more time for individual students and more specialist learning support staffing would make a huge difference.
Keeping and retaining teachers is top of mind right now, and this term, our teachers will also be meeting to consider a pay offer – and assessing if it’s enough to make sure that teaching is valued and is an attractive profession.
That is why teachers at our school will be attending paid union meetings this afternoon, Tuesday 28 February and Wednesday 1 March. We will be keeping the school open for these two afternoons and splitting classes with the remaining staff at school.
When we support our children to learn and succeed, we are supporting whānau and communities to thrive. We look forward to another great year in 2023 – and together with your support building the case for better investment in our tamariki.

Movin’ March starts tomorrow!
We are proud to be a Movin’March school and we’re looking forward to seeing whānau and students walking or wheeling to or from school. Walking, biking and scooting is a great way to improve wellbeing, kick start learning for the day and it’s also great for the planet! Don’t forget your WOW Passport so we can stamp your trip and keep an eye out for our low plastic spot prizes!
Whānau can enter a photo of their journey to or from school and be in to WIN 1 of 5 x adult or child Micro Scooters! We’re also giving away family passes to Staglands Wildlife Reserve or Zealandia. WOW… that’s 15 prizes to be won! Go to the Movin’March Facebook page and share your photo in the comments under the weekly theme post. Winners announced by 12 April.
Let’s get stamping! We’ll stamp your walk or wheel trips at the gate and all entries will go in the draw to win one of 12 x $400 MYRIDE vouchers (you don’t have to complete your whole card to go in the draw!). If your family lives too far away, why not park a short distance away from the school gate and walk or wheel the rest of the way?
