IN PERSON Communication Connections: Supporting Language Development

Tuesdays, October 25, November 1, November 8,

and November 15; 6:30 to 9:00 p.m.

($35 registration fee)

ESU #3, 6949 S 110th St. LaVista NE, 68128

Language and vocabulary development in young children is found to directly impact success in reading and pre-academics as they begin school. The very best thing educators and providers can do to help children in this area of development is to focus on them and talk to them about everything they and you are doing while you are together.

Each week of this 10-hour series will focus on a key part of the early childhood day (meals, diapering/potty, play, and outdoor time). Participants will identify skills they would like to enhance based on their observations of children and practice age-appropriate suggestions for infants through preschoolers to encourage warm, communicative interactions with the children in their care.

ONLINE Autism in Early Childhood: Learn the Signs

Wednesdays, November 2 and November 9; 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

($10 registration fee)

During this 2-part session, attendees will be provided an overview of characteristics for young children including facts and myths of Autism; learn information and examples of social, communication, behavioral, developmental, and sensory characteristics and how to document observations of concern; plus identify steps child care providers can take if they have concerns about a child’s development. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) resources and supports available to strengthen work with young children and strategies to address common issues when integrating children with Autism into a community based program will also be shared.

This training is for those working with children ages 2-8 and being presented by staff of the Metro Region ASD Network in partnership with ELC Omaha Region.

ONLINE Supporting the Development of Communicating

Thursdays, November 3; 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

and November 17; 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

($10 registration fee)

Research shows that executive function skills affect school readiness, school success, college graduation rates, work and life success; and these skills can be taught and encouraged at any age. These monthly sessions (2 hour information session with a 1 hour "coaching" follow up session) focus on fun, everyday activities, including using children's books, that educators and providers can use to promote and support the development of an essential executive function skill.

Children are primed to communicate at birth and this skill continues to develop as they grow and learn. Communicating is much more than understanding language, speaking, reading and writing – it is the skill of determining what one wants to communicate and realizing how our communications will be understood by others.

Future sessions in this series:

  • Making Connections: Jan 5, 6:30-8:30 pm; Jan 19, 7:00-8:00 pm

  • Critical Thinking: Feb 2, 6:30-8:30 pm; Feb 16, 7:00-8:00 pm

  • Taking on Challenges: Mar 2, 6:30-8:30 pm; Mar 16, 7:00-8:00 pm

  • Self-Directed Engaged Learning: Mar 30, 6:30-8:30 pm; Apr 13, 7:00-8:00 pm

It's getting cold outside, but don't let that stop you from providing nature-based activities for your littles! Research shows that nature-based activities improve children’s behavior, academic achievement, social skills, health, and physical development. This workshop will focus on activities from the nationally-recognized environmental science program, "Project Learning Tree," and help you integrate nature play into your daily/weekly routines all year long. As a result of attending this workshop, participants will receive 1.5 inservice hours, a curriculum guide full of additional lessons and activities, and tips for incorporating nature play into seasonal practices at their early childhood program.

IN PERSON (Unselfish) Self Care Saturday

(Registration fee $20.00)

ESU #3 6949 S 110th St, LaVista 68128

Simply put, self-care involves activities to focus on your own physical and emotional health. When you pay attention to your needs and care for yourself on a consistent basis, you’re usually better equipped to handle daily stressors. Those who see the best results often practice self-care on a consistent basis. Join us for a full day of self-care including discussion about avoiding burnout, strategies for putting mindfulness to work for you, "make n take" self-care items, and ... massages!! Self-care is not selfish and this day is all about the importance of taking care of you.

Being Your Best You During the Holidays

The holiday season can be full of family, laughter, and smiles … and maybe stress, a feeling of lack of control, or exhaustion! It is necessary to focus on yourself during the holidays (and any time) as you work to make a difference in the lives of others. The tips and strategies shared in this session will help you to remember, “You matter!”

ONLINE PD for Free: Are You Asking the Right Questions?

Tuesday, December 6; 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

(No registration fee)

Virtually

Adults create powerful early learning opportunities by being intentional about the type of questions they ask. When talking with young children, it can be easy to fall into the trap of asking questions that simply require a “yes” or “no” or very specific type of answer. Open-ended questions and phrases allow children to provide full and meaningful answers that convey their thoughts and feelings. Let’s talk about questions – Are you asking the right ones? Where will your next question to a young child take you?

IN PERSON Creating Spaces for Learning (and Play)

Thursday, December 15; 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

(Registration fee $10.00)

ESU #3 6949 S 110th St, La Vista, NE 68128

There are so very many reasons to have centers in early childhood classrooms! That being said, educators and providers need to keep in mind there is a difference between simply furnishing a play zone with materials and creating a space that offers functionality and identity ... and opportunity for learning. During this session, the how and why of learning spaces in early childhood programs will be explored and specific information about what should be included will be shared.

ONLINE Meaningful, Mindful, and Motivational Mondays

Monday, December 19; 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

(No registration fee)

Transforming Learning with a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset nourishes your mind and brain with positive thoughts and beliefs that maximize your ability and potential. The development of a growth mindset allows children to exercise autonomy over their learning, helping them to develop positive lifelong learning habits. The best way to teach a growth mindset is to work on developing your own so this session will focus on the characteristics of a growth mindset then provide tips and strategies for teaching this important information to young children in a way they can understand.

ONLINE Supporting the Development of Making Connections

Thursdays, January 05; 6:30 p.m. to 8:30p.m.

and January 19; 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

(Registration fee $10.00)

Making Connections is at the heart of learning and making unusual connections is at the core of creativity. All children and adults can benefit from improving their capacity to make usual and unusual connections. Making Connections involves paying attention, cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control.

ONLINE Leadership is Doing the Right Thing for Children

The Early Development Network serves children ages birth through two years of age who qualify for early intervention services according to Nebraska State Guidelines (Rule 52). Services are provided at no cost to the family, are provided in the child’s natural environment (e.g. home, childcare) and are confidential.

Childcare and preschool providers can make a referral to EDN, but the parent ultimately has to consent to proceed with any screenings or evaluations. It is important to make parents aware of any concerns that you have and to partner with them as they seek resources to address those concerns. If a child is between the ages of three and five, the family can contact their local school district directly to inquire about supports and services.

All Nebraska school districts are obligated to provide services beginning at birth for children who meet eligibility criteria and demonstrate a need for early intervention. To make a referral, use the school district contact numbers below:
