Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
October 30th-November 3rd
What's Going On This Week:
Ms. Harris' Science: In Science this week we will start our new unit on Plants and Animals. We will cover Lesson 1 "Life Cycle of a Plant" and Lesson 2 "Classifying Plants". Our quiz over Lesson 1 and 2 will be next week on Thursday 9th. On Tuesday, students will complete a Halloween-themed STEM challenge, where they must create the tallest tower using only candy Pumpkins and toothpicks. Thank you to everyone who was so generous with sending in candy.
Ms. Harris' Social Studies: In Social Studies, students will begin studying the different European colonies that formed in North America. We will study the English, Dutch, French, and Spanish settlements. We will then analyze closely the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. Students will take a quiz over this information the week of November 13th.
Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA: This week we are starting our new unit, Reading the Weather, Reading the World. This week we are finishing our Spooky Stories to read on Halloween. We will then start our new unit, Boxes and Bullets: Personal and Persuasive Essays. Spelling words will be given in a rotation next week based on the students’ groupings. More info to come later.

This week in math we will start 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication.
Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: This week in math students will learn 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication. Just like with 4 digit by 1, they will learn the standard algorithm along with the area model method to check their work. Please remind your child to be studying his or her multiplication facts. We will continue timed tests on Tuesdays and Fridays until winter break. In ELA, we will begin our nonfiction unit. Students will learn how to analyze nonfiction by looking at text features and structure. Towards the middle of the week students will also begin their next novel study on characters who are outsiders. In writing, we will begin our Expert Exhibit project. This is different from Genius Hour. Genius Hour is one hour a week for the whole year. Expert Exhibit will be our writing time each day for the rest of the quarter. We will leave here at 8:30, but if you are chaperoning please be at the Nature Center at 8:00 for orientation. I will send chaperones additional information today. If your child did not sign up for a school lunch, please send their bag lunch on Monday. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and layered clothing. We will be walking a lot!!
Spirit Night at Chick-fil-a is next Tuesday 7th
Come out to the Baxter Chick-fil-a and support FMES while eating dinner!
PTO meeting is Thursday 2nd at 9:30
All parents are welcome! This is a great way to get involved in your child's school and have a voice in the activities and events we have at FMES.

* Thank you so much for everyone who has sent in your $4 for the Social Studies Weekly. These are such a great resource to have in the classroom. The deadline for the $4 is Friday. Please send it in with your child or pay online at the FMES website.
* Junior Achievement Day is Wednesday November 8th. Thank you so much to Christi DeWaele for being our JA instructor that day!
* Book Character Day is tomorrow. Students can wear a costume that represents a character from a book.
