READING ASSESSMENTS

Dear Parents/Guardians,


As many of you know, this fall, we began utilizing Istation as a new way of collecting data on our students to help drive instruction in the classroom. We wanted to update you about a change in how Istation will be reporting ISIP data about your child starting in January.


This fall, students were divided into three tiers of proficiency, which were color coded red, yellow and green. As the state of North Carolina continues to work to adapt the tool and provide clarity, the Istation reports will now show students' levels of proficiency, as opposed to a tier. (Please reference the triangle graphic below.)


As a reminder, ISIP, Istation’s Indicators of Progress, is a computer-adaptive assessment system.


ISIP assesses all critical areas of early reading development for Kindergarten through 3rd grade students. These critical areas include phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, alphabetic decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling and text fluency. ISIP accomplishes this through the administration of student-friendly, short tests that measure a student’s overall reading ability. Click here to learn about the ISIP and all the components.

A: Program Overview includes cycle of instruction, last date of use, and program usage.


B: The Lexile Student Measure is provided based on student performance within the comprehension subtest on the ISIP Assessment. (A student’s Lexile score can be used to find reading materials on particular topics or of interest to the student at the appropriate level.)


C: ISIP Grade Equivalency — performing as an average student in a specific grade who took this test in a given month.


D. ISIP Percentile Rank — better than or equal to x% of students who took this test at the same time

CAROLINA PANTHERS “3RD & GOAL READ ALONG”

The Carolina Panthers “3rd & Goal Read Along” video series is a free resource for classroom teachers and parents. The program is designed to encourage a love of reading for students in K-3 with the goal of helping students develop grade level reading proficiency skills by the end of 3rd grade. The series features Panthers players and special guests reading popular Scholastic book titles in a fun “read along” style for students to follow.

WHAT ARE THE FIVE GOOD CAUSE EXEMPTIONS?

  1. Limited English Proficient students with less than two school years of instruction in an English as a Second Language program.
  2. Students with disabilities, as defined in G.S. 115C-106.3(1), and whose individualized education program indicates (i) the use of the NCEXTEND1 alternate assessment, (ii) at least a two school year delay in educational performance, or (iii) receipt of intensive reading interventions for at least two school years.
  3. Students who demonstrate reading proficiency appropriate for third grade students on an alternative assessment approved by the State Board of Education. (Istation 258 scale score for ISIP ER as the required score for the pathway of proficiency for third grade. Score must be obtained during the BOY, MOY, or EOY benchmark windows)
  4. Students who demonstrate, through a student reading portfolio, reading proficiency appropriate for third grade students. Student reading portfolio and review processes used by local school administrative units shall be approved by the State Board of Education.
  5. Students who have (i) received reading intervention and (ii) previously been retained more than once in kindergarten, first, second, or third grades.
