- Hurricane Juan- $300 million destruction, 8 fatalities
- Alberta flood- $1.2 billion destruction, 4 fatalities
do not form much of a threat. As they emerge over water because of the collision of cold air masses and warm air masses they travel at a high speed but tend to slow down and fall when it reaches far inland. These 3 most destructive type of disasters are not a big worry to Canada as of our location.
Many people, talking about billions of people around the world live in places where it is occasional for natural disasters to occur. Destroying homes, villages, wiping out people and limiting the resources is a struggle people must face. Wanting to live in a Canada, they are able to escape from that type of region and live where there are very few disruptions.
When a disaster does occur in Canada, governments municipal, provincial and federal come together and act right away. As Canada is a developed country, it has all the needs for the citizens in Canada even if a disaster were to occur. Governments always try their best to fix it as soon as possible to get people's lives up and going and back to normal. Canada's' location might not be the best compared to others, but our location is great to live in peacefully with very little disturbance of your daily life.

In a developed world.....
- GDP- $43 200 per capita
- Education (literacy rate)- 99%
- Health care access (# of doctors/100 000 people): 203/100 000
- Food supply (# of undernourished people)- 5%
- Natural increase rate (birth rate- death rate): 10.28-8.2= 2.08

Life expectancy and natural increase
Along with that, the living conditions also affect the natural increase rate (birth rate-death rate). The demographic transition model indicates the level a country would be on. With the birth rate still higher it hasn't reached stage 5 yet. So Canada is on the border of stage 4-5. In stage 5 it is basically the same thing as stage 4, with later marriages, good health, reliable food supply. Canada's natural increase is stable and has a very slow increase which indicates its in stage 4. In stage 5, the birth rate is very lower, with a slow decrease in the natural increase which is when the population starts to decrease. But it being in this stage it is evidence that Canada is a well developed country with great health care, food supply and better conditions.
Canada's economy
Industries
Primary:
Canada contains many different natural resources and are rich in them. It's main resources are fishing, mining, oil, forestry, agriculture, and energy. There's currently only 4.1% labour force in this industry as it has decreased overtime due to the vast amounts of industrialization in Canada but is still at great value to Canada. Our resources are located all over and are dispersed everywhere creating jobs to the people in that area. Canada is very large in exports and imports, supplier great amounts to other countries. For example wee produce and supply most of our oil, energy, uranium and power to US and we are their greatest supplier. Canada is also the 6th largest importer and exporter of agriculture.
With our very highly skilled labour force this is possible and is still a growing industry even though it has decreased overtime. It's a solid founbdation for Canada as we've continued to extract of resources efficiently or trying to, to maintain our limited amount of resources.
- 10% of the world's forests
- largest fresh water supplier globally
- leading mining nation, produce over 60 different metals and minerals
- $846 million value of aquaculture
- extensive amounts of gas, oil
Secondary
Employing almost 3 times as much, the secondary industry accounts for 20.7% labour force in Canada. Manufacturing is crucial to the production of a product as it takes resources and makes them into a finished good that's ready for the next stage where its gets shipped and sold into local stores. This industry is located depending on the company. There are a few factors that influence this decision which is the proximity of the raw material, location of markets, water and power source, transportation, political factors and labour supply. So this industry could be in rural areas or urban and is all over throughout Canada.
Tertiary
This industry is the widest range of varieties of jobs that is considered in this. As it most of the labour force in Canada, it takes up 3/4 of it representing 75.2% of the employers. Providing services to the community whether it's towards the economy (basic service) or just to the community it is in (non-basic) is essential to everybody's daily lives. Selling finished products, being a bus driver, or teaching at a university at school is all an essential to one's life. Without these services there is no way people can obtain what they need, and if they could it would be very difficult.

Globalization
We have the strongest connections with US, Mexico, China as we export and import the most with them. NAFTA is the reason why Canada, Mexico and US are such big trade partners with each other. NAFTA is an agreement that states the trading between these 3 countries is free, and no tariffs are placed on any products/services. This gives an advantage for the three as it is easier to trade while saving money from the placed tariffs on good if traded with other countries. Canada is able to export a lot more which is only great for the economy. As of 2012, our exports value reached $462.9 billion, ranked #13 in the world. Our connections have allowed us to do this, when connections were made and it's easier to trade that way.
Overcoming urban sprawl
This surprisingly making Canada better. It is acknowledged that this is a major issue in Canada that has to be overcome soon as it's affecting Canada and the people. One major issue that's not being resolved but being reduced is waste management. You've probably heard this a billion times, but one person can make a difference and everything counts as Canada strives to be a cleaner and more sufficient country. Changing your usual daily routine to make better choices such as using reusable containers or just recycling is a step further for Canada as there are already parts of Canada where the cities have started to change and are trying to be more sustainable.
Coming up with a plan on how to use the land, interact with it, use the natural resources, improve the economy to make a better place for people is what Canada strives to do and is hoping for the best. Kingston for example, is doing this exact thing. Their vision includes economic, cultural, environmental and social factors they hope to fulfill one day. Steps by steps, Kingston is becoming more and more sustainable. Kingston is now ranking third for the most sustainable city in Canada following Ottawa and Quebec and is followed by Kitchener and Calgary. These cities where it is for urban use is on its way to sustaining itself. Accounting all the needs and services for the citizens and trying to make the environment better is making Canada better day by day. Soon this will be followed by more and more cities all over Canada as it will take a while to do but this is a wonderful start for Canada to become more sufficient
Landform regions
Western Cordillera
Composed of ranges of high peaks of mountains, this region lays of the West coast of Canada. Covering parts of British Columbia, Yukon and Alberta this region contains mountainous areas with plateaus, valleys and plains. Since it's made of sedimentary rock it also contains fossil from ancient seas and lots of metals. This is great for Canada as it is very lighting populated, the extraction of these metals will also create job opportunities, attracting more people to live there.
Interior Plains
This continental climate region is right beside the Western Cordillera. Now covering most of Alberta, 3/4 of Saskatchewan and about 1/3 of Manitoba and is also made of sedimentary rock. Unlike the Western Cordillera, this region is very flat and is mostly grasslands. This is the perfect region for agriculture with the fertile soil and flat land and solid temperature year round.

Sustaining the future
Sustainable extraction
Canada has started using more sustainable ways of extracting our resources while trying to keep it efficient so it'll last longer. Some ways we've started is by using more renewable energy sources such as solar energy and wind energy. These do not need the removal from the earth unlike oil and natural gas done through the process of fracking and through our oil sands. Little by little will this start going in affect as we're giving our environment a break and stop polluting it with the process of extraction.
Agriculture has also started using ways that are better than the normal way on a farm where farmers use pesticides and chemical treatments on the products. Ways such as greenhouse farming or crop rotation are ways that are way better for the environment while producing more fresh, local products for consumption. Greenhouse farming waste less water as the water is pumped right to the root of the plant, minimizing the use of our fresh water resource. Also pesticides will not be needed as it will be in a greenhouse where those pests cannot get it. Crop rotation is where one crop is planted in one season and the next season another crop would be grown instead of the same one. This allows the soil to replenish itself and not tired itself out losing all its nutrients and minerals.
