Device Information

Students are required to use the device issued to them at the beginning of the school year when they attend their learning center day. Families are able to use their own device at home. Students will be provided a device, charger, and headphones at the beginning of the school year. There will be an option to take a mouse and stylus for middle school students.


Listed below are the replacement costs for the items so families are aware of the expenses. All families will have the opportunity to purchase device coverage for $20. This device coverage only cost the replacement cost of the computer if something were to happen to it.

Students are provided many supplies in the K12 course materials. There are still some supplies needed for the time spent at the Learning Center. Please bring these materials to your first class day.

Art

Art Elective

Students enrolled in Art will receive some supplies in their K12 materials to complete the art curriculum at home. Ms. Barry will meet with the students once a month during the AM Learning Center sessions. She will also be offering Open Art time for students during the AM session one week a month.

Below are a list of supplies that are not supplied but would be helpful to have at home. Some items are more specific for students in 6-8th grade and are marked accordingly.

Some art lessons will be completed at the Learning Center. In providing the most opportunities to all students, Ms. Barry needs some supplies to share for ALL. You can bring any of these supplies throughout the school year to the Learning Center.

Microsoft Office Benefits

Students in Omaha Virtual School will use Microsoft Office products regularly with their students. Some of the programs they will use in the classroom and at home are:

  • Microsoft Word: The flagship word processing program of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Microsoft Excel: Creates graphs and spreadsheets, arranges data, and organizes information.
  • Powerpoint: Creates robust slide deck presentations.
  • OneDrive: a cloud storage application.
  • OneNote: a note taking application. Each student will have a shared One Note notebook with their classroom teacher.


  • One benefit to being apart of Omaha Public Schools is the five FREE Microsoft accounts available to use on personal home devices. The additional five accounts only expire when if the student leave OPS. They will give you access to all of the above programs!
  • Creating a Learning Schedule

    One of the many exciting aspects of the virtual school experience is getting to manage the learning day—and that means designing a schedule that fits your student. Just like students who attend a brick-and-mortar school, online students learn best when the school day is well structured. If you’re a new Learning Coach, you might be wondering what goes into creating a successful school schedule. To help you get started, here are some scheduling tips to keep in mind!


    Talk to your student: It’s always a good idea to get your child’s input before you set up his/her schedule. The school day will be much more productive if both of your needs are being met or, at least, considered. You can begin by using a family planner to put a plan in motion. Below are examples of some questions to ask during the planning process:

    • Which subjects do you prefer to work on first, middle, and last?
    • What time of day do you feel like you have the most energy?
    • Which courses are easier for you? Would it help you to work on math one day and science another day?
    • How would you run things if you had your way? After hearing your child’s answers, discuss how his or her expectations differ from yours and how you can compromise.


    Be patient:
    Don’t get discouraged if the schedule you create isn’t perfect at first, as it may take some time to tweak and modify it before your family is satisfied. Think of the first few weeks as a trial period for your schedule rather than as something permanent or official. The great thing about virtual school is that you can adjust your student’s learning day as much as you need to.


    Change your schedule to fit your family’s day:
    Even though students work well with a schedule, they don’t need to follow the same one every day. For example, if your student participates in extracurricular activities on Tuesday and Thursday, you can alter his/her schedule on those days.

    Schedule time for breaks: Naturally, students need to reenergize their brains from time to time. Even if your student doesn’t ask for a break, it’s important to add a few in the schedule just in case he/she becomes restless. Something as small as a walk around the house will often give students the energy they need to continue working. Breaking up the day will also make the workload feel much less overwhelming and more doable.

    Display the schedule in your home:
    Instead of letting your child rely on you to provide reminders, help him/her develop independent learning skills. Students should be able to view their learning schedule as needed, as it will help them stay on task and feel more prepared. Consider displaying the schedule in your student’s learning space so he/she can easily refer to it. You can even have some fun with the schedule by decorating it to fit your student’s personality or interests!

    Once you find a schedule that works for you and your student, you will be pleased by how productive the learning day can be. You can easily create a successful school schedule with communication, persistence, and variation.

    Joining an online school can be very overwhelming! There are some great tools that will assist the student and Learning Coach in being successful in their journey with Omaha Virtual School. Check out these great resources:

    1) Omaha Virtual School has some great resources on our school website under Parent Links. There are different training opportunities recorded for LCs to watch plus links to K12 specific tutorials on how to do attendance, navigate the weekly schedule, etc.

    2) Stay up to date on school happenings through the weekly newsletter through Smore- each week includes announcements, upcoming events, happenings in the classroom and more.

    3) K12's website is helpful in navigating the curriculum with tutorials and customer support
