NC Celebrates 100 Years of Safe School Bus Transportation
With Gov. Roy Cooper proclaiming September as Safe to School Month, North Carolina is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the state’s first use of motorized school transportation with events Sept. 5 in Oriental and Raleigh. Although the first “truck” that was used in Pamlico County hasn’t survived, a vintage school bus from the early 1930s will be on display at the event in Oriental along with the state’s newest and most advanced model, complete with seat belts and GPS.
Here in Scotland County, over 3,700 of our students ride one of our 75 yellow school buses every day and our drivers log over 1 million miles every year.
To read more about the Safe to School Month recognitions that are planned across the state, click here. And a big THANK YOU to our amazing bus drivers and Transportation Department for ensuring that our most precious assets are delivered safely to and from school each and every day!
Bright Ideas Grant due September 15
Educators in grades K-12 at participating schools are eligible to apply. Maximum grant amounts vary based on the requirements of the sponsoring local electric cooperative. Interested educators must complete a formal application, which will thoroughly outline their project, and grant winners are selected based on a competitive evaluation process.
Each year, about 2,000 applications are accepted from teachers in a variety of disciplines including music, art, history, reading, science, career-planning and information technology.
The program offers a convenient and simple online application process. Click here for the application.

'On the Road in Scotland County'
OT Corner
Welcome back! My name is Karen Hunter and I am one of the Occupational Therapists serving students in Scotland County Schools. I have been a Pediatric Occupational Therapist for over 20 years and all of those years have been working with students with varying degrees of need within a school system. I have found that many people do not know what an Occupational Therapist (OT) does. The short explanation is I work with students who have been identified as having concerns with sensory processing, handwriting concerns or fine motor concerns in general. I think it is very important for all of us to have correct information to help our children in any way possible. This school year I will continue to give information regarding various subjects that affect our students and hopefully answer some questions that are out there but have not been answered….
One of the hot topics with the beginning of school is “Should my student use a “fat” pencil? The short answer is “no”! Short, small pencils are best for small hands. Writing with a small pencil helps build the muscle strength and endurance needed for coloring, writing, etc. Broken crayons and pencils and golf pencils are our friends! Not only does it help build strength and endurance it also helps them with a use of a mature hand grasp. Pencil grasp will be the topic of the next OT corner. If you have a specific topic you would like me to address please feel free to email khunter@scotland.k12.nc.us
