Supporting your beginning teachers
Invest in the future
Did you know...
- Students taught by beginning teachers supported by a high quality mentoring program have 3-5 months more growth on standardized tests in reading and math than students taught by beginning teachers in traditional mentoring programs.
- Beginning teacher retention in Iowa is 70%. This means that 30% of beginning teachers leave the profession within their first five years.
- Districts involved in a high quality mentoring program have retained 85% of beginning teachers within the district.
- The cost of recruiting, hiring, and training replacement teachers is between $4,366-$10,000 in rural districts and $15,325-$17,872 in urban districts.
PLAEA invites district leadership to engage in a facilitated conversation about the possibility of forming a high quality mentoring consortium for beginning teachers.
Whether your team is interested in taking next steps toward forming a mentoring consortium or improving the current mentoring program, the information that will be shared is valuable.
Please send a team (superintendent, principal, mentor teacher and/or instructional coach) to a meeting from 8:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Nov. 20. The meeting will be held at either the PLAEA office in Spencer or Storm Lake depending on the location of the districts that send teams.
Please consider this opportunity and register your team by Nov. 17.
