The Second Grade Scoop
May 5th, 2017
Dear 2R Families,
It is hard to believe we only have a little over a month left of school! As the school year starts to wind down, we are finding more opportunities to include some technology fun into the lessons! Be sure to read about it below.
We are also looking forward to our two field trips next week. Please see below for more information on how your child should prepare for the trips.
Lastly, thank you to all the families who volunteered to help during Teacher Appreciation Week and/or sent cards. It was a lovely week and your appreciation was definitely felt throughout the school. I am very thankful to be a part of such a wonderful community!
Miss Rossi

Field Trips
Philadelphia Art Museum
Wednesday, May 10th
9:45-1:15
We will be riding the busses to the Art Museum. Again, if rain is expected that day, please send your child with a rain jacket and appropriate shoes to walk from the bus to the museum. We will be eating lunch at the museum so please pack a paper bag lunch, meaning everything in it can be thrown away after lunch. Please do not send any money to spend.
Greenfield Hall
Friday, May 12th
9:45-11:10
We will be walking to Greenfield Hall in the rain or the shine so please send your child prepared for whatever the weather may be that day! We will be learning about Haddonfield's history.
In preparation for the trips, please be sure to remind your child of the safety expectations when they are in a crowded public place.
Math
We have just reached the end of Unit 8. The students learned all about 2D and 3D shapes. The students learned to classify shapes by their attributes, such as their number of sides, angles, vertices (corners/points), parallel lines and right angles. Please be sure to read the Family Letter in the HomeLinks book for more information on the vocabulary we are learning.
In Unit 8, we began to focus on arrays. This is a very exciting concept for students because it lays the foundation for learning multiplication. Students know that if an array is made up of 4 rows with 3 squares in each row that the number model to represent it could be 4+4+4=12 or 4x3=12.
At home, please continue to...
- Practice basic addition and subtraction math facts. If they have mastered those, start practicing multiplication!
- Continue to encourage students to explain their thinking aloud or on paper.
- Talk about fractions or "equal shares" you see in daily life. We know all about halves, thirds and fourths at this point.
- Include your child in any measuring or estimating done in everyday life.
- Check out Number Grid Difference, Shape Capture and Basketball Addition games on the Everyday Math website. Please email me if you need your student's login.
Reader's Workshop
At home, please continue to...
- Encourage your child to read for at least 15 minutes each night.
- Encourage your child to read aloud to you from time to time. They can read a book aloud to you or even just the dinner recipe.
- Ask your child questions about what they have read.
Writer's Workshop
Social Studies
In preparation for our field trip to Greenfield Hall, we have been learning all about the history of Haddonfield. We kicked off our discussion of Haddonfield by presenting and sharing our Flat Haddy projects. The students loved hearing about where everyone's Flat Haddies traveled.
Grammar
We used tons of technology to help us practice. We love using Plickers in class. Each student gets a card that is registered to their name on the website. Their card has a QR code and the letters A,B,C,D around the edges of the QR code. The students answer questions that appear on the SMARTboard by turning their QR code so that the letter they believe to be correct is facing up towards the ceiling. Then the magic happens! I quickly scan the room with the iPad and in a matter of seconds I have all the students answers displayed on my screen. They love "playing" Plickers!
Another favorite is Kahoot! Kahoot is an online quiz game. The students, again, see questions on the SMARTboard and then click the button on their iPad or computer that they believe to be correct. They love seeing who clicked the answer the fastest on the scoreboard screen.

Order Due Date - Saturday, May 27th
Thank you to everyone who participated in the April purchase. Because of your orders, we earned 8 free books for our classroom. The order should be in by Thursday, May 11th. I will send home the May catalogue on Monday.
Please take a few moments to explore the April selection next week together and let your child help choose books he or she is excited to read. For a wide selection of quality children's books that are just right for your child's reading level, please order online at scholastic.com/readingclub.
If our class places $50 worth of orders all together, we will earn $8 in free books. With each order placed, our class also earns bonus points that I can then use to purchase more books for the classroom or even other materials like math manipulative for the classroom. It is a great program to get involved in. Thank you for supporting your child’s reading both at home and in the classroom!
