Reminder Virtual Fridays Starts Tomorrow

REMINDER: High school in-person students grades 9-12 at Central High School, Central High School on Oakes, Lake View High School, PAYS and Carver campuses will have the first of three fully virtual Fridays tomorrow, Nov. 20. For virtual Fridays, high school students will not need to report to campus but instead connect online for classes using the Schoology Learning Management System. SAISD is piloting virtual Fridays for high school students due to staffing issues and for the health and wellness of our community for three dates: Nov. 20, Dec. 4 and 11.

Students will be expected to log in to all courses through Schoology on virtual Fridays and 1) complete an assignment, 2) make progress in the course, or 3) communicate with the teacher through Schoology. All students must log in to second period for attendance purposes. Completion of assignments and communications can occur throughout the day and does not necessarily have to occur during the scheduled class period.

This temporary shift to virtual Fridays for our in-person high school students will enable SAISD to allocate our personnel resources where they are most needed in our elementary and middle schools. By the numbers, Friday is consistently the most challenging day for staffing purposes.

We also recognize that our high school students are generally better equipped to be independent learners than our younger students, and have experience working within our Schoology platform. Selecting high school for Friday closures also correlates with the current medical guidance we are receiving. Information from our local health authorities suggests younger students have lower transmission rates of COVID-19 and are less likely to be infected by it.

Student and staff health and safety remain our top priority. We continue to evaluate and consult with local health officials and the Center for Disease Control multiple times per week to assess current conditions. SAISD has implemented protocols at all campuses and facilities to maximize safety.

For more information on the virtual Fridays pilot click this link. We look forward to continuing to serve the needs of our community, staff and students. SAISD will provide more information in the coming weeks through our website, social media platforms and email. We appreciate our families and students working with us to provide successful educational experiences as we navigate these new challenges and changes. Your ability to be flexible is important as we partner with you to educate, inspire and empower every student in these times.

Free Movement in Edgenuity over Thanksgiving Break

San Angelo ISD students are out of school for Thanksgiving break November 23rd-27th. This holiday break provides an excellent opportunity for students to complete work through the Virtual Learning Academy. Students have the opportunity to work through their courses without being hindered due to being locked out of quizzes. Standard procedure blocks a student from moving forward if he or she fails a quiz. During this holiday break for students, adjustment to district settings will allow students to work freely through their courses and not be stopped from failing a quiz. Students that fail a quiz will need to schedule time with their Digital Support Teachers to retake a failed quiz after the holiday break.

Instructional Model Switch Request Forms Now Available

Beginning today, we are opening the window for two weeks to allow parents to switch instructional models for the 3rd 9-week grading period. Families will have the opportunity to switch between in-person instruction and the Virtual Academy through Tuesday, December 1, 2020. Switches made through this process will be effective at the start of the 3rd 9-weeks, which begins on January 5, 2021. Additional opportunities to switch will be available at each 9-week grading period during this school year. If you wish for your student to remain in their current instructional model preference, no action is required from you at this time.

Below you will find links for forms to request to switch your student's instructional model. The forms are specific to each school, and you will need to complete a separate form for each of your students. After your request form is received, you will receive a follow-up call from your child’s campus to verify that you are requesting the switch and to discuss other related information. It is important that you connect with your campus for this call. If you have students at more than one campus, you should receive a call from each campus.

Important Reminders

Please review the following important reminders before completing a request form as it could impact your choice of instructional model:

In-person Instruction:

  • We ask for support and cooperation from parents to send all students to school with a mask regardless of age.
    • During times of transition, all students will wear a mask. If your student does not have a mask, one will be provided to them.
  • Parents are to self-screen their students for symptoms of COVID-19 daily in compliance with this Acknowledgment and Agreement. Parents are expected not to send their child to a SAISD facility if the child or anyone in the child’s household has any of the COVID-19 symptoms.
  • At this time and until further notice, visitors are not permitted on our school campuses during the school day as part of our updated district-wide visitor policy to minimize the exposure and community spread of COVID-19.

Virtual Academy:

  • Virtual Academy students are expected to log-in daily, although scheduling of the day can be flexible. Your student should complete assignments in each subject area each day.
  • Secondary Virtual Academy students should expect to spend a comparable amount of time to what they would spend in a traditional school setting to be successful. This will vary somewhat, but could extend past the hours of a traditional in-person school day if the student is in advanced courses that require additional homework.
  • Virtual Academy students will need a device. If you are switching to the Virtual Academy and do not have a device, please contact your campus to secure one.
  • Virtual Academy courses are not taught by SAISD teachers, but Virtual Academy students will have a SAISD digital support teacher who will be available to provide support for students during the regular school day.

Secondary (Middle School and High School) Course Availability:

  • Not all courses are available within each instructional model, so your student’s course schedule may require adjustments to be made by working with your campus counselor.
  • It is also possible that in-person classes may not have the capacity for new students. This is less likely to be an issue with core courses like English and Math, and more likely when dealing with certain elective and advanced courses.
  • If your schedule requires adjustment, you can walk through the process when you receive your verification call concerning the switch request from your campus. If, after discussing any scheduling issues, you decide not to change instructional models, your student can remain in their current instructional model.

Instructional Model Switch Request Forms

Click the appropriate link(s) below to complete and submit the online Instructional Model Switch Request Forms no later than Tuesday, December 1, 2020. Upon successfully completing the request form, you will receive a confirmation email with a copy of your submission. We recommend that you print or save a digital copy and keep the copy of the confirmation email for your records.

Virtual Fridays Starting Nov. 20th, Dec. 4th and Dec. 11th

Due to staffing considerations, including allocation of limited substitutes, and the health and wellness of our community, San Angelo ISD will pilot fully virtual Fridays for our high school in-person students Nov. 20th, Dec. 4th, and Dec. 11th.

This means on Fridays for these three dates only our in-person high school students, grades 9-12 at Central High School, Central High School on Oakes, Lake View High School, PAYS and Carver campuses, will not report to campus but instead connect online for their classes using the Schoology Learning Management System. High school staff will continue to report to campuses for work on Fridays. This update does not impact elementary or middle school in-person students who will continue to have in-person instruction on Fridays as regularly scheduled. All Virtual Academy students will continue as regularly scheduled via the virtual platform.

Additional details for the virtual Fridays for high school in-person students include:

  • Virtual Fridays are only planned for the three Friday dates listed above. This update is only for Fridays. Monday through Thursdays will remain at normal schedules on campus.
  • Students should log-in to Schoology on Fridays by their second period for attendance.
  • Extracurricular activities and athletic schedules will be communicated by coaches and sponsors.
  • High school students can pick up “grab-and-go” curbside lunches as part of the free meals for all children each Friday between 1:00 - 1:35 pm at the following locations: Lake View High School - 900 E. 43rd and Lee Middle School - 2500 Sherwood Way. The student does not need to attend one of the listed sites to receive the free meal. Parents and students will not need to pre-order meals through SchoolCafe.
  • High school students enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses at Howard College will also receive online instruction on Fridays and will not need to report to the West Texas Training Center (WTTC).
