ELA Weekly Update
Week of November 30th to December 4th
Reading Workshop
This week, we are still reading the book, Because of Winn-Dixie. We have started to create theories about our characters and learning how they act, how they interact with other characters, and when characters get "out of character". We are reading chapters 11-20 this week and will be taking a quiz on Friday about what we read. This quiz will be open-book and students can use their notes.
We are also reading the story, Beauty and the Beast. We created our own vocabulary stories to pre-read the vocabulary, and will be holding discussions on inner and outer beauty.
Writing Workshop
This week in Writing, we are working on learning all about figurative language. We have begun learning about similes and metaphors. We have watched the video, "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," read two different books to find similes and metaphors, and will be creating our own winter object describing the object using similes and metaphors. We will continue this week with learning about how to use imagery in our writing.
We are also beginning a unit on Expository Writing. We have learned so far, how to write a thesis statement with three reasons. We will be working on crafting an essay using our thesis statement.
Greek and Latin Root Words: Mot, Mob, Mov: to Move
This week, we are studying the Greek & Latin Root stem, Mot, Mob, and Mov. This week, our homework is still the same as previous weeks. We will still have our Vocabulary Quiz on Friday and our Keynote will still be due on Friday.
We will have our last vocabulary quiz next week. We will not have a vocabulary quiz on the week of December 14th.
Winter Book Exchange
On December 17, we will be having a Winter Book Exchange. We are asking that each of our students brings in a slightly used book that other students would enjoy. Please wrap this book in wrapping paper for exchange with others.
