GRT 2021: Deacon King Kong author James McBride to visit with GHS students
The 2021 Greenwich Reads Together selection is Deacon King Kong: A Novel by award winning author James McBride. The GHS Library has print copies available for check-out and you can borrow online, audio, and print copies at Greenwich Library.
A New York Times bestseller and winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Fiction, Deacon King Kong was one of the most celebrated books of 2020. Awarded the Gotham Book Prize, it was named one of the Top Ten Books of the Year by TIME Magazine, The New York Times, and Entertainment Weekly. Deacon King Kong was also an Oprah’s Book Club Pick and one of Barack Obama’s “Favorite Books of the Year” in 2020.
Please mark your calendars - Mr. McBride will be speaking virtually with GHS students during block 5 on Thursday, October 28 (Day A). Stay tuned for more information on his virtual visit later in the month.
For those who would like to see Mr. McBride live and in person, he and his band The Good Lord Birds will be visiting Greenwich Library on October 27 at 7:00 pm. Space is limited and registration for the event will open at 7:00 pm on October 6.

Library Art Competition - Cardinals in the Library!
Students - please help us decorate the library bulletin board! Submit your drawings, paintings, or photographs depicting your interpretation of our Fall 2021 theme - Cardinals in the Library. Cardinal Bucks Gift Certificates will be awarded for the best five submissions.
To enter: 1. Create your art, 2. Create a digital copy as either a JPG file or PDF, 3. Email artwork to laurajean_waters@greenwich.k12.ct.us by October 15, 2021.
Free Avon Theatre Educator Membership
Did you know that the Avon Theatre Film Center in Stamford offers an educator membership free of charge to all Fairfield County full-time K-12 educators? An educator membership provides you with:
- free general admission for regular screenings
- a discount on monthly film series and special events
- the online Avon Film Catalogue to enhance your curriculum
- discounts on group visits for field trip screenings

Banned Books Week, the annual celebration of the freedom to read is September 26 - October 2. Take a look at the top 10 most challenged of the 273 books that were targeted last year, along with the reasons cited for censoring them. How many of the top 10 most challenged books have you read?
I grew up 'under a rock': My parents banned social media until I was 17. I'm glad they did.
