Here's What We are Learning!
It's hard to believe that we are entering the last month of school! The months of May and June will be full of exciting, engaging activities for our class.
ELA - We are finishing our fairy tale unit and can't wait to participate in our culminating activities. The first week in May, we will focus on our close read by analyzing Yeh-Shen, a Chinese Cinderella. Following the close read, we will begin reviewing various strategies and skills that we have learned this year.
Math - We will continue with measurement the first two weeks of this month. Students will learn about centimeters and meters through a variety of hands on activities. We will test on this unit during the 2nd week of May. The remainder of the year, we will prepare for 3rd grade through review activities. Most of our review activities will focus on word problems, 3-digit addition and subtraction, and math journaling.
Science - Thank you for sending in baby pictures! We had tons of fun learning about the human life cycle. We also planted lima bean seeds to kick of our plant and animal life cycle unit. This month we will learn about the life cycles of butterflies, frogs, chickens, sea turtles, and spiders. Then, we will move to animal habitats.
Social Studies - Immigration and American Symbols will be our Social Studies focus. We began this unit in April with a simulation of what the journey was like for immigrants who were arriving in America. We will use the first 2 weeks of May to learn about Ellis Island and the countries that the majority of early immigrants came from. We will also spend some time sharing and learning about the cultures of the students in our classroom. We will end the month learning about American symbols and landmarks.

Conference Night Success
Thank you to everyone who came out for our student led conferences. I really enjoyed the conversations that were happening between parents and students. We will continue to work on the goals that were shared in the self-assessments and learning reflections. If you were not able to make it to our conference night, the papers will come home in your child's folder this week.
