A Message From the Principal

The 2019-2020 school year is off to a great start at Southside Middle School. Students are excited to be back and they are looking forward to representing Southside as a Panther in many different ways.

There is a lot of school spirit at Southside and we have great students!

With a larger student body than last year we have made some positive changes. First, we now have three lunches instead of two. This actually allows for fewer students in the cafeteria at a time. That number is about 200 for each lunch. Also, we are not allowing students to have Chromebooks in the cafeteria. Although students initially groaned with this change, it is great to see them carrying on real conversations across the tables.

Another big change is the teaming concept. Each student (with very few exceptions) is a part of a group of students who have the same English, Math, Science, and Social Studies teachers. This allows teachers to implement plans that support the students across the curriculum. It also keeps students in one area of the school reducing excuses for being late to class.

Finally, students have agenda books this year. They should be listing all of their assignments in their agenda books for parents to review.

As a last point I want to thank parents for their support. Together, we will continue to make Southside Middle School a great place for students!

SAFETY TIPS FOR HOT WEATHER

Getting too hot can make you sick. You can become ill from the heat if your body cannot compensate

for it and properly cool you off. The main things affecting your body’s ability to cool itself during

extremely hot weather are:

 High humidity: When the humidity is high, sweat will not evaporate as quickly. This keeps your

body from releasing het as fast as it may need to.

 Personal factors: Age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation,

sunburn, and prescription drug and alcohol use all can play a role.

TIPS FOR EVERYONE

 Stay in air-conditioned indoor location as much as you can.

 Drink plenty of fluids even if you do not fell thirsty.

 Schedule outdoor activities carefully.

 Wear Loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.

 Pace yourself.

 Take cool showers or baths to cool down.

 Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you.

 Never leave children or pets in cars.

 Check the local news for health and safety updates.
