1st Grade Essentials
- Handwriting Paper
- Blue line (upper case), dotted line (lower case), and red line (stop)
- Fat pencils (move to skinny pencils as handwriting improves)
- Teach handwriting using Zaner Bloser
- Writing folders to include sample lists of words, sounds, and parts of speech
- Anchor charts
- Use smarty to teach and practice correct spacing
- Carry phonics into writing mini-lessons
Writing Workshop Schedule
*15 min. mini-lesson
*15-20 min. shared writing
*30 min. to include handwriting practice and independent writing
*Drawing only for published pieces
1st Nine Weeks
- Assess upper and lower case letter formation
- Review common and proper nouns
- Introduce possessive nouns
- Review strong verbs
- Introduce past, present, and future verbs. (Use the words past, present, and future)
- Emphasize adjectives go in front of nouns
- Complete sentences: capital letter at the beginning and ending punctuation
- Capitalize dates and names
- Review and use because clause
- Write a narrative as a class modeling editing and revising
- Respond to stories orally stating problem/solution, title, author, and main characters (TDA)
Second Nine Weeks
- Introduce adverbs
- -ly words
- Four types of sentences (exclamatory, interrogative, declarative, and imperative)
- Simple and compound sentences (conjunctions)
- Write an opinion piece together as a class modeling revising and editing
- Respond to stories in writing stating problem/solution, title, author, and main characters
Third Nine Weeks
- Review prepositional phrases
- Commas in a series
- Commas in dates
- Pronouns
- Write an informative piece together as class modeling revising and editing
- Begin summarizing stories orally
- Respond to stories in writing stating problem/solution, title, author, and main characters
Fourth Nine Weeks
- Write a narrative on the same topic after teacher modeling. Students edit and revise their pieces.
- Write an opinion piece on the same topic as the narrative after teacher modeling. Students edit and revise their pieces.
- Write an informative piece on the same topic as the narrative and opinion pieces after teacher modeling. Students edit and revise their pieces.
- Respond to stories in writing stating problem/solution, title, author, and main characters.
- Students use recipes when writing.
