PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
This week has been a pleasure getting to know you and your students. I have enjoyed meeting everyone at the different events and around the school. I was also able to drop in to multiple classrooms to read a story and answer your children's questions.
Grosse Pointe Public Schools is in the process of providing multiple professional development opportunities and initiatives to staff so that we can better serve your children. Teachers are using a new science curriculum that better aligns with the next generation science standards and uses a phenomenon based approach to science. We are also examining implicit bias and the systems we have in place that promote equity. These are in addition to the other initiatives in reading instruction and classroom response to behavior that we are sustaining for a second year. You might notice that your child's teacher is out of the building more than usual in the next few weeks as we work to get everyone updated.
As we move into the season of giving and gratitude, I want you all to know how grateful I am for the Kerby community. In my short time at Kerby I have seen a dedicated staff committed to teaching and inspiring their students. I have seen kind and respectful students who are building their leadership skills through the seven habits. I have also seen caring and loving parents who nurture and guide their children. Thank you for being a part of the Kerby community. I look forward to a wonderful year together!
With gratitude,
Ms. Bourke

Kerby Kudos
- Two of our very own Kerby 5th graders were recognized as the top winners in week 3 of the Front Desk Global Read-Aloud Kahoot challenge. Over 7.2k students participated and 126 teachers sent in podium scores. Congratulations to Matthew B. and Jack P. for a job well done!
- Kerby's Pam Cronovich was named the 2019 Metro Detroit Changemaker in Education. Please help us congratulate her for the award and thank her for everything she has done to impact the education and lives of our learners and families.
OFFICE NEWS
- The office is in need of a few pairs of girls leggings in various sizes. These are good items to keep in the office in case a child needs a new pair of pants during the day. We currently have a few sizes of pants for boys.
- Pokemon Cards - There has been an increased number of students bringing Pokemon cards to school. This is causing a disruption to their learning and distractions during the school day. Please remind your children to leave their toys, including Pokemon cards, at home unless it is their show and tell item for the day.
- Lost and Found - There is an abundance of items already in the lost and found lockers. Please come and take a look. The lost and found lockers are located across from the music room. Also a reminder to LABEL ALL OF YOU CHILDREN'S ITEMS (coats, boots, lunch boxes, water bottles). This really helps get things back to who they belong.
LEADER IN ME
GREEN TEAM
New to packing a waste-free lunch? No problem, we’re going to be providing education to the students before the Kick Off date and sending home tips so we can all make changes together. Here are some simple changes to consider:
A Waste-free Lunch:
- Reusable lunchboxes
- Replace plastic bags:
- Pack sandwiches, fresh fruits, vegetables, and treats in a reusable lunch container(s). Consider a bento box! They’re fun to eat from and fun to pack!
- Pack cloth napkins and stainless-steel forks and spoons
- Skip the juice pack. If kids use their water bottle it costs less, is healthier and good for the environment!
