GT with Mrs. G
Week of October 23
Greetings from Mrs. G!
Mrs. G's Classroom Happenings at SSS this week:
1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade PTP: We will begin working on the PTSA Reflections contest. Over the next six sessions, we will work on creating projects in as many areas as we can. We will also continue our ongoing brain teasers, math, and reading.
4-8 Grade will be selecting new extensions today. See below for descriptions!
Mrs. G's Extension Offerings for 2nd Quarter
For 4th, 5th, and 6th graders on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, I am going to teach a class that continues the kind of reading and thinking we did with Chasing Vermeer. We will probably read the second book in that series, The Wright 3. However, you can still take the class if you didn't take it first quarter. We may incorporate another book from the same genre, like The Westing Game, The Egypt Game, or The Anybodies. We are also going to incorporate some investigative journalism, architecture/design, and other cool stuff.
For 7th and 8th graders on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, I will be offering a class called Law and Justice. We will learn how the court system works, what lawyers and judges do, and we will participate in a mock trial experience. I am looking for some mentors in the legal field to help us out!
On Fridays, I will offer Academic Team as an extension. We will put 4th and 5th graders together, and then 6th, 7th, and 8th graders together. I think it will be an awesome way for us to maximize our practice time!!!!!
KYA Trip is November 5-7!

Cool Opportunities for Kids
2. PTSA is looking for entries in their annual Reflections contest. I have a flyer and entry forms. The competition is open to all kids in all grades. Click here for more info, or contact Lindsey Johnson or Jennifer Oberlin. The entries are due November 29, 2017.
3. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is asking the Commonwealth’s art teachers and students to get started on this year’s Adopt-a-Highway Art Contest and submit their entries before the deadline on Oct. 31.
The Adopt-a-Highway Program’s Art Contest is held annually to increase public awareness about the damaging effects of litter, change attitudes and behaviors about littering and educate Kentuckians about the Adopt-a-Highway program.
Entries must be postmarked on or before Oct. 31 to be considered for this year’s contest.
The contest is divided in to four age groups: 5-8, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-18. Winners of each age division earn a $100 gift card while second and third place finishers receive a $50 gift card. Additionally, first through third-place recipients for all age groups have their work featured in the Adopt-a-Highway Calendar and receive framed prints of their posters while the originals are framed and displayed at the Transportation Cabinet’s Conference Center in Frankfort.
Last year, nearly 1,600 students from across the Commonwealth entered the contest.
Additional information on the Adopt-a-Highway Program, including entry forms for the 2017 Adopt-a-Highway Art Contest can be found at http://transportation.ky.gov/Adopt-a-Highway/Pages/Events.aspx
