VPS SUMMER Connection
A Resource for Families - June, July, and August 2020
Dear Families,
It is hard to believe we have not seen your children in over thirteen weeks! We are so incredibly proud of the work and learning your children have done during this time. And we are so grateful for all you have done to support your child and us!
Just like during the closure, it is incredibly important that your children continue to engage in learning throughout the summer months to continue the progress they have made and keep their minds active.
- Summer reading is critical to help your children keep the knowledge and skills they have learned all year. With my own children, it has been helpful to find fiction series books they enjoy, as well as really engaging informational texts which are highly motivating for them to pick up during quieter times each day.
- Writing is connected to reading. Research has demonstrated that when children engage in writing, it positively impacts their reading fluency and comprehension. Consider ways to incorporate writing into your summer days. Your child can write messages in chalk on the sidewalk, write a letter to a family member, or keep a journal of their summer experiences.
- Your child has worked hard to continue building their mathematical thinking and become more automatic with their fact fluency. Building time into each day for these things will help your child to continue growing as well.
Even though the school year is coming to a close on Tuesday, we are still committed to making sure your child has learning resources throughout the summer months. We are ensuring you have access to all of our weekly Smore resources that have been provided since March (click HERE or find it on our District webpage).
In addition, our team has created this Summer Smore for your child to use all summer long to keep them engaged in learning. It is filled with reading, writing, and math activities for your child to choose from, including many extra read-aloud videos and links to online learning sites. To support math development, your child can continue practice mathematical concepts using the digital tools they have been using each week through Pearson Realize. MWI provides videos and "try it" pages to learn and practice concepts. Games are an engaging way to continue building math muscles. These links can all be found in the Summer Smore.
Remember that school is not a place. Becoming educated is a state of mind. Have your child continue to notice and wonder each day. Look for ways to encourage your child to be an explorer and have them investigate what brings them joy.
Use the resources below to inspire your family all summer long. Happy learning!
With Great Appreciation,
