West Irondequoit CSD update from Aaron Johnson
January 4, 2022
UPDATE: If your child came home empty-handed, please ask them to get their kit at their school's main office Wednesday. Thank you!
Hello Families,
Unless your family opted out, your children should arrive home today with a free COVID-19 rapid test kit courtesy of the Monroe County Department of Public Health. We ask that you please administer them today/tonight. There are two tests in each box, which include directions on how to administer and read the results. You may also want to watch the “How-To” video at THIS LINK and read FAQs from MCDPH (includes link to video with Spanish subtitles).
This process is being carried out throughout our area to limit the spread of the virus. It’s another way, along with consistent and proper masking, distancing and sanitizing, to help make sure our schools stay open for in-person instruction. So, we ask for your cooperation.
If your children test positive, please report their results to the county within 24 hours at healthcalls.monroecounty.gov/hometest. For questions, call the county's COVID hotline at (585) 753-5555. We also ask that you call your child’s school nurse on Wednesday morning to report it. Here is a directory link. Negative results do not need to be reported.
UPDATE: If your child came home empty-handed, please ask them to get their kit at their school's main office Wednesday. Thank you!
RETURN TO SCHOOL GUIDANCE
I want to clear up any confusion on the parameters for students returning to school after they’ve had COVID. It’s important to know there is a difference, at this point, between students and staff. On Dec. 24, 2021, the NYSDOH issued the guidance that allows critical workers recovering from COVID to return to work after five days of isolation if they are fully vaccinated and symptom-free. Our staff falls into that category. However, it does NOT apply to students. Please click THIS LINK for complete details from the Dec. 24th release. According to MCDPH, students must still follow the return guidance on these flowcharts.
PROACTIVE PLANNING
I want to thank our staff, students, and you for making sure all students are taking their 1:1 device home every night and that they are fully charged and ready for the next day. Lugging these devices home adds another layer, especially for our younger learners. But making sure our students are equipped -- if we face the unforeseen need to briefly shift to remote learning -- will pay dividends. This week, we are consulting with administrators and staff to update our remote learning structure and guidelines, and once ready, we will send you more details on what to expect, if necessary.
Already, this week has been a whirlwind of activity welcoming people back and making sure test kits are accurately distributed. I want to be sure to thank our exceptional staff at large for their coordination and our administrators, particularly the building administrators and our COVID Administrator on Assignment, Mr. Chuck Miller. Their quick work was critical in making sure delivering test kits home went off without a hitch.
In partnership,
Aaron R. Johnson, Ed. D
