Extended School Day

In order to recapture precious instructional time lost due to Hurricane Irma, the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will extend its school day by 20 minutes, Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, through the end of the first semester on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017.

DCSD schools and offices will also remain open on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 7) as the district ensures that students don’t miss out on lessons vital to their academic achievement.

The decision to extend the school day was a collaborative effort across all DCSD divisions. In addition, Dr. Green is empowered to make “scheduling changes to the school day because of inclement weather or other emergency conditions.” A primary goal was not to impact Fall Break or Winter Break for both families and employees who may have commitments based on the approved school year calendar. Also, with the unpredictability of North Georgia weather in the winter, the district does not want to use all its inclement weather days before the onset of that season.

Staff reporting hours will remain unchanged (7:50-3:50). However, Wednesday meeting start times (Leadership, Faculty, and Department) will be at 3:50pm.

Druid Hills High will likely extend each period by 5 minutes. Here is the tentative bell schedule:

New Trash Compactor - From Mr. Roberts

There is a newly delivered trash compactor place on the built up concrete pad rear of the gym...freshly painted green.

Please, DO NOT place any trash in the newly delivered trash compactor. This compactor may take months to be properly connected. Therefore, it should sit empty until the proper connections have been made.

However, unless the ROLL OFF dumpster with black plastic side sliding doors has been taken to be dumped it will be the place for ALL trash to be discarded. It currently sits at the steps leading to the softball field. If you send students to take trash please also inform them.

Coins 4 Cure Fundraiser

September is childhood cancer awareness month and DHHS will be hosting the coins for cure fundraiser. Coins for Cure is a fundraiser that helps aid research in childhood cancer. The drive raised almost $120,000 last year, and 100% of that went to actually helping people. DHHS will be hosting jars for the drive through October 4. The jars will be located in the front office, library, and cafeteria during lunch. Please consider donating any loose change or dollar bills you may have to help those children in need.

AFAEE Program

Please review the attached flyer regarding the Atlanta Families' Awards for Excellence in Education (AFAEE) program. The DeKalb County School District was honored to have one award winner last year who was celebrated at the AFAEE awards ceremony on May 3, 2017, and our very own Ms. Staines was recognized during the 2014-15 school year!

Please consider nominating our teachers and administrators who are doing a phenomenal job every day for our children. Recipients earn a $7,500 award, the $7,500 includes funding for a school project of their choice ($3,500), funding for a professional development opportunity ($1,500), and a personal stipend ($2,500).

Nominations can be submitted online through September 30, 2017 for teachers and school administrators in our district. To learn more about the Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education program and to submit nominations, please visit http://atlfamiliesawards.org/
