Chancellor Charger Weekly Update
News You Can Use for the Week of December 7, 2020
From the Principal
Greeting Chancellor Chargers,
We are two weeks from the Winter Break and the end of the second marking period. Parents and guardians, I need your help. While it is great that many of our students are regularly attending classes (hybrid and virtual), quite a few are not following through with submitting works. Please know that our teachers understand that students are still adjusting to this instructional model. They have and continue to be flexible with submission deadlines; however, teachers are unable to provide timely feedback if students do not submit work. Please encourage your students to submit their work before the end of the second marking period. Teachers will greatly appreciate this as they will have time to enter the second quarter grades timely. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact your students' teachers. Thank you for your continued support.
Leading the Charge!

Message from the CHHS Counseling Department
The ChHS School Counseling Department is hosting a virtual Junior/Senior Expo on Wednesday, December 9th at 5 pm. Join us from the comfort of your home to listen in on sessions to help students plan their future. https://forms.gle/8Uqg94pjhvobrt8S7.
Students have the opportunity to interact with colleges and employers from our area, as well as across the state. This year, we have revamped this event to accommodate our current climate.
The sessions will be open to both students and parents/guardians. The event will consist of five sessions designed to provide families with valuable information that will help them with college and career planning.
Once families register, they will receive an email from us including the Google Meet link for each session. I have also attached a copy of the flyer that we are sending out. Please help us share this information, and feel free to encourage your students to attend.
Here are descriptions for the sessions:
5:00-5:20 - Juniors: What are Your Next Steps?
Each year, our school counseling department partners with our English teachers to provide our Juniors with pertinent information regarding college preparation. During this session, parents will receive insight on the information that has been provided. Students and families will also be provided with additional details and tips on how to effectively use your Junior year to plan for Senior year. We will share information regarding the SAT/ACT, college exploration, college visits, and other important topics.
5:25 - 5:55 - Resources for Interviewing
A representative from our Career and Technical Education department will facilitate this session in which students will receive tips on acing the interview process. Students will learn how to properly prepare for an interview as well as how to present their best selves to a potential employer.
6:00-6:30 - College Resources for Students With Disabilities
A representative from Germanna Community College will provide our families with valuable information regarding college resources for students with disabilities. Students and parents will receive information that will assist them in a successful transition to college.
6:35-7:05 - Understanding the ASVAB
An administrator of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) will present information to our families to detail the ASVAB and its benefits. This information will be helpful in determining how the ASVAB can be helpful to all students interested in learning more about their strengths and career interests.
7:10-7:40 - College Panel Discussion
We are providing a forum for discussion, led by a panel of Chancellor High School alumni and a professor from Germanna Community College. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about college academic and social life. Students will additionally be able to receive insight into the college experience in light of COVID-19.

Voluntary Student Accident Plan Coverage
Voluntary student accident plan coverage during the VHSL revised sports seasons is available.
You can download a student insurance application or enroll online at www.kidguardinsurance.com. Printed football insurance enrollment forms including enrollment instructions are also available at the school.
Coverage options for parents to purchase accident protection during VHSL sanctioned sports practices and competitions during the revised VHSL designated football season dates will again be available. The deadline date for the purchase of the tackle football insurance plan is February 26, 2021.
The $9.00 school time plan will provide coverage for interscholastic sports during the revised VHSL specified season’s dates except for tackle football. A $35.00 extra premium payment is required to cover tackle football practices and competitions.
The $9 school time or $35 football plans will not cover injuries sustained during sport’s off-season conditioning programs, practices, scrimmages, games, camps, leagues, clinics, or competitions that are conducted prior to the designated VHSL sanctioned sports season’s dates. However, a student may purchase the 24 Hour Extended Plan for offseason conditioning and weight training.
The deadline date for the purchase of the tackle football insurance plan is February 26, 2021. All football insurance applications and premium payments received after February 26th will be refunded to parents and coverage will be void.
The purchase of the 2020-2021 school insurance plans will provide accident protection for VHSL sanctioned activities only during the current, 2020-2021 school year. The School Time Plans expire on the last day of school and the 24 Hour Extended Plan will extend coverage to the summer and expire on the last day of summer.
WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
As we are approaching the end of the first semester, I want to again express my sincere gratitude and admiration for the teamwork on continuous display from our students, families, and staff. We have completed a total of 15 weeks of instruction since August (8 distance learning and 7 hybrid in-person). Though it is a daily and weekly fluid struggle, it simply would not be possible without such cooperation and execution in alignment with our mission, “Together, we prepare our students for their future.”
Below are a few brief reminders as we look to the week ahead:
Announcements & Reminders
On November 30th, the school board conducted a special session to receive two reports for their consideration and input.
The first was regarding how our school division continues to monitor and evaluate health metrics in conjunction with the impact of rising cases of COVID-19 on our capacity to safely and effectively implement our hybrid instructional model. In addition, our acting regional health director, Denise Bonds, contributed to our presentation and discussion. As cases increase throughout our region and state, we continue to work in close collaboration with Dr. Bonds and local health officials. At this time, they continue to support and recommend our current course. However, we will continue to be vigilant in closely monitoring, in conjunction with local health officials, both external and internal data to determine when and what kind of adjustments should be made.
The second report provided to the school board involved recent decisions and guidance from the Virginia High School League (endorsed by the Governor’s office and VDH) regarding winter sports. As you are aware from the communications earlier in the week, the school board approved for winter sports to begin with tryouts on December 7th and the 14th.
Both of these presentations/reports are linked here and the meeting is also recorded for you to watch.
As we are currently evaluating both the school metric and the impact of rising cases on our students and staff, we are considering modifications to the instructional calendar. This may include altering the half days noted in December and January as well as potentially transitioning to predominantly distance learning prior to and/or following the winter break. No final decisions have been made. However, should we be in a situation that due to health concerns we need to make the shift for any period of time, it would be important to ensure a smooth transition in order to provide equitable services to all of our students. Any significant changes will be communicated promptly if such a decision is made.
As a reminder, our COVID-19 Dashboard is updated weekly and can be viewed in the Return to Learn section on each school’s website or by clicking this link: SCPS COVID-19 Dashboard. Also on our webpage is a link to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Dashboard. This site provides data and statistics regarding COVID-19 positivity rates and cases per 100,000 by locality, region, and state. We continue to remain in moderate ranges according to the 14-day averages.
On Tuesday, December 1st the Office of Student Support Services hosted our Family Connection webinar on Mental Health and Community Connections. If you were unable to view it live, you may view it any time at www.regionalwebtv.com/family-connection.
This past Thursday, December 3rd, the Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Team met to receive and discuss the development of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 school division budget. Following a short summary of the process and timelines, parent representatives were given the opportunity to weigh in on preliminary thoughts on upcoming budget priorities as well as information needed for better understanding of the system budget.
Have a safe and productive week!
Dr. S. Scott Baker
