Aztec Update March 19, 2023
Principal's letter for parents and caregivers
29th week; Spring rally March 24, Coffee with the Principal March 24
Good evening Aztecs
Last week was relatively calm at Azusa HS. ELPAC testing is wrapping up for our English Learners, students completed their second benchmarks in English classes, science teachers were getting ready for CAST testing for all juniors, and the weather continued to impact our outdoor athletic events. Our music programs performed at a district wide music review on Thursday morning, and went on field trips to Disney Hall and Citrus College to see music last Friday. Last Monday, we invited parents to walk the campus during lunch to see how the school operates during lunch. The parents asked questions about restrooms, safety, food lines, and what next year would look like with more students. We look forward to having more of these opportunities after spring break for Azusa and Gladstone parents to visit the campus and see our campus during lunch.
Last week we also had the opportunity to meet with Gladstone members of the Azusa Student Union on Friday afternoon and will be meeting with Azusa members of the Azusa Student Union this Monday. The students spoke to their need for connection and belonging at Azusa and wondered how we would fully include them next year. They asked about policies relating to safety and how we support students academically and socially-emotionally. We have some ideas in terms of building community at the student and family level. We are looking forward to building the culture the next few months.
This week it looks like more rain for the first 3 days of the week. We have a spring sports rally and a rally day schedule on Friday. We also are hosting coffee with the principal in person on March 24 at 8:45am and virtually at 3:45pm. We will be reviewing the January update for the district LCAP and updating parents on the school. The last chance for seniors to buy cap and gown is on March 21 so we hope all seniors take advantage of this last opportunity.

Sports Updates
Rain continues to impact our spring sports schedule. We are in league play in all sports this week except for Track and Field. The area high schools are meeting on March 21 to decide new sports leagues that will take effect in the 24-25 school year. It is likely we will see some different schools in our league for 24-25 due to our increase in size next year. League athletic directors and principals are concerned with competitive equity and student safety when developing leagues and we believe that the options being considered are fair for our teams at Azusa.
The sports schedule for this week is below.
