Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
October 11 2019
From the desk of: Principal Hoese
This week's message is short and sweet: Treat others as you would like to be treated.
We had some student behavioral issues that could have been completely avoided had this saying been followed. Unfortunately, these were learning opportunities for our students instead. But, that's part of the learning process and mistakes are part of that!
SRO Leitzen's Tip of the Week!
From the Desk of: Counselor Mrs. Meumann
It’s important that we encourage our children to express their feelings. Here are some ways that you can help your child learn about and express their feelings:
Tune into cues-Look at your child’s body language and listen to what they are saying.
Behind every behavior is a feeling-Try to understand the meaning and feeling behind your child’s behavior. You can help your child find other ways to express that feeling once you know what is driving the behavior.
Name the feeling-Naming feelings is the first step in helping kids learn to identify them. It allows your child to develop an emotional vocabulary so they can talk about their feelings.
More tips will be included next week.
Kindergarten learning to make Applesauce!
The room smelled great as the apples began cooking. We were all able to enjoy our eating our applesauce at the end of the day!

Speech and Language News: Mrs. Beveroth
What are the warning signs that my child may have problems with speech?
Speech is how we say sounds and words. It is normal for young children to say some sounds the wrong way. Some sounds do not develop until a child is 5, 6, or 7 years old. Speech milestones of typical development include:
· By age 3-3½
o 75% of speech should be understood by unfamiliar listeners
o Should produce m, n, h, w, p, b, t, d, k, g, f, and most vowel sounds
· By age 4-4½
o 100% of speech should be understood by unfamiliar listeners; may still pronounce some words with errors
o Should produce v, y (yes)
· By age 5-5½
o 100% of speech should be understood by unfamiliar listeners; may still pronounce some words with errors
o Should produce s, l, sh, th, some s-blends and l-blends
· Common sound errors that may continue at age 6 include
o r, l, z, th, ch

ART News!
The kids have really worked hard in art class and we have finally posted most of the artwork on Artsonia and have the school hallways lined up with some nice work. Of course I haven’t posted or hung up everything. There is still more art to post and hang.
The artwork is non-stop!!!!!
Currently the kindergarteners are working on jack-o-lanterns, 1st graders are finishing up a warm and cool color painting, 2nd graders are finishing up on Fall leaf project, 3rd graders are working on scrap art or scrap paper mosaic pieces, the 4th graders are laboring over a Warhol-like design that features an image of what interests them, and the 5th graders are making an attempt at an organic shaped clay sculpture.
Keep an eye open and log into Artsonia or check out the Little Steamer Art Room on Facebook.
Veterans Day
We are looking for Veterans who would be willing to come into the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes on Friday, November 8 beginning at approximately 12:30pm. We are hoping to find Veterans who would speak about the branch of the military that they have served or are serving in, how long they have served or are currently serving, and a memory or story that they would like to share. This time can also include an opportunity for the students to ask questions. We are hoping to give our Veterans an opportunity to speak about their experiences in a smaller setting. Each Veteran would be assigned to a grade level (3, 4, or 5) and would spend about 15 minutes in each homeroom section for that grade. Each Veteran would speak to approximately 20-27 students at a time. Following this time devoted to hearing from our Veterans, the entire school will participate in a tribute to the Veterans and their service to our country.
A note for people to sign up was sent home with the youngest in each family at the elementary school. If you did not receive this, and you are or have someone interested in participating, please contact the school.
If you have any questions, you can contact Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Marten, Mrs. Strehlow, or Mr. Hoese at (815)589-2911.
