Barksdale's First Lego League Team
This year, a small group of 5th grade students will represent Barksdale Elementary in the First Lego League Challenge. Students have been hard at work building and programming a robot to complete missions around the competition field, and also developing a solution to a real world problem that involves this year’s theme – hydrodynamics.
Our team, called The Fellowship of the Lego, will compete in our first scrimmage on Thursday, November 9th, at the Academy High School in Plano, and then take what we have learned to our qualifying competition on Saturday, December 8th. We are so proud of all that the team has accomplished so far, and excited to see how all of their hard work, and teamwork, will pay off this season!

Specials Corner
All students go to "Counselor Class" every other week for a 30 minute lesson. During the first nine weeks, students learned about who the counselor is and her job at the school and then about ways to care for others and for ourselves.
In Counselor Class this month, students are talking about GRATITUDE. They are learning that gratitude means that you are grateful and thankful for the people and things that you have in your life. They are discussing ways to show gratitude, such as showing that you appreciate the things you have by taking care of them, and by saying THANK YOU to the people who help us and take care of us.
Throughout this year students will continue to explore topics such as perseverance, how to be a problem solver, friendship and kindness, empathy for others, and the courage to be yourself.
Parking
During evening events, you may park in the staff parking lot, as well as in the church lot next to Barksdale.
Will you be visiting the Barksdale campus?
Just as a reminder, all visitors are required by PISD to present a government issued picture identification (no photocopies or electronic images) upon entry to the campus and receive a temporary visitor badge. PISD utilizes a national database to ascertain if the visitor can be cleared for entry.
the Lost and Found is full
Please ask your students to check the lost and found for any missing items. It is located across the hall from the library.
Consider labeling personal belongings so that they can be returned.
All clothing left in the lost and found at the end of the semester, Wednesday December 20th, will be donated.
Lunches and Forgotten Items
All lunches and forgotten items can be placed in the bins just outside the office. It is the student's responsibility to retrieve these items.
The student can ask the teacher to check the bin if he/she has forgotten something.
Triathlon News
All students have an opportunity to compete in a triathlon this year. If the students complete all three-events: Reflections, Science Fair and Bronco Press Book, they will be recognized and given a trophy at the end of the year.
- PTA Reflection due - October 19
- Science Fair Project due - January 17
- Bronco Press Book due - April 25
Science Fair - 2nd Triathlon Event
It is time once again to prepare for the Elementary Science and Engineering Fair. Though participation in this annual event is voluntary, we want to encourage interested students to take advantage of this opportunity to exhibit their knowledge. This event is the second part of the Triathlon.
If your child would like to participate, please complete the attached form and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher. Once you submit that form, a handbook will be sent home with further instructions about the rules and judging of projects.
The Barksdale Science and Engineering Fair will be held January 18, 2018. All projects will be due January 17, 2018.
