Winters' Wonderings
Week of September 9-13, 2019
WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE!!!
EXTRAORDINARY FIRST WEEK!!!
We had such an amazing first week!! It was so great to have One on One conferences with each family and get to know your families and your child through YOUR eyes! I truly believe that parents are a child's first and most important teachers! I am looking forward to partnering with you for your child's success this year! Please reach out to me anytime if you have any questions or concerns!
❤️ Ms. Winters
Up This Week...
- review what it means to have Giant Pride at Park Elementary
- assess and practice sight words that were learned in K-1 to make students have a solid foundation for new second grade learning
- learn about fluency and review decoding skills
- practice math fact fluency through addition flash cards, XtraMath, and other addition games
- begin our first math unit Place Value to 1000
- begin learning about the Scientific Method and get ready to be Second Grade Scientists
- learn about bus safety and being a responsible bus rider
- have our First Giant Pride Celebration to kick off the new year!
This & That...
- Weekly Behavior Charts--> Weekly Behavior Charts will be coming home daily. Please sign and return to school each day. A new Chart with updates for the week will be sent home each Friday.
- Scrapbook page--> Due Monday! This was sent home at conferences or in your child's folder, if you were unable to attend. We want to start sharing them and getting better acquainted with our classmates! After we share them, they will go into a class book!
- Family Photo--> Please send in a family photo as soon as you can for us to display on our classroom "Family Tree"
- Spelling/Phonics tests--> Spelling/Phonics tests will be given most Fridays. Our focus with spelling in second grade is the phonics (spelling) patterns. There will be 5 words that are given, that follow the pattern, that are NOT given to study. It is not my goal to "stump" kiddos, however learning the spelling patterns and being able to apply them in their reading and writing is very important to overall literacy growth!
- Sharing Day--> Your child will be able to share once a week on an assigned day of the week (I will send your child's day home on their weekly behavior chart coming up soon!). If your child forgets or misses their day, they will have an opportunity to share the following week. Sharing should fit into backpacks, be one item or a small collection of similar items, and be non-electronic. Remind your child this item is JUST for sharing. It stays in their backpack for the rest of the day and is not a toy to be played with while at school.
