The Shark Scoop
Naples Park Elementary Newsletter
A Note From the Principal
Dear NPE Families:
Our first few weeks have gone very smoothly! I would like to thank everyone for embracing our new safety procedures. Students are great at remembering to use hand sanitizer when leaving and entering a new area as well as wearing their masks. We have times and places for students to have mask breaks and teachers understand the need to give students these breaks whenever possible. We are now back in full swing and off to what I know will be another amazing school year.
On Thursday, October 29th, we are asking students to again, dress up as their favorite storybook character. This year we are unable to have our Storybook Character Parade but we still want to give students the opportunity to dress up. Just don’t forget your mask! Please review the section in this newsletter to learn more about what your child can wear. Last year, students did a phenomenal job picking and dressing up as their favorite storybook characters and I can’t wait to see what they do this year. We will be taking pictures of every classroom and posting them on social media for all to see.
Again, Thank you for all that you do to make Naples Park such a great place to learn!
Warmest Regards,
Michelle Auger
Principal
Option 2 Students Wanting to Return to NPE for Face to Face Learning
News from the Naples Park PTO
As we all know, school looks a lot different this year, however we are not letting it get us down! Our kids are doing amazingly well dealing with everything that is “new”, and our teachers have been rock stars keeping everyone safe, healthy, stable and LEARNING. As a PTO we want to continue supporting both our students and our teachers. One way we can do that is by supporting the fundraising efforts of the PTO. A few members have been working on ideas for fun, creative, and exciting ways to support NPE this year. If you have any ideas, please email NaplesParkPTO@aol.com. The first way you can show your school spirit and support the school, is by purchasing a Naples Park Elementary School Spirit Shirt. This year we have two options to choose from. See the order sheet below and send a check or cash for $15 each with the order form to school with your child. The order will be filled as soon as possible. Remember, the shirts can be worn any day!
As far as events go this year, we know we will not be able to have our traditional Thanksgiving Banquet or Breakfast with Santa, but we are working on alternatives. Please send an email if you would like to be part of the brainstorming crew or would like to support the school in any way. We appreciate all that you do as parents and teachers and hope that everyone has a great year!

Counselor’s Corner
I am enjoying getting to know all the students at Naples Park Elementary both face to face and virtually. During the month of September, I visited all the classrooms and we talked about Self-Control. We discussed how sometimes when we have big emotions like anger, frustration or sadness; we might be tempted to make a bad choice. We all agreed the best thing to do when we feel ourselves getting upset is to take a nice deep breathe. The skill of Self-Control aligns with Habit 1: Be Proactive. Something you can do at home to reinforce this skill is talk with your child about different emotions and model for them how you calm yourself down. For example, when faced with a frustrating task, talk with your child about how you are feeling in that moment and choose a strategy such as deep breathing, taking a time out, and/or take a walk outside to model patience.
Take Care,

Character Dress Up Day is October 29th
Naples Park Elementary will be tweaking our parade from last year due to covid. This year our School-Wide Storybook Character Dress Up Day will be held on Thursday, October 29th, however we will not be able to have the parade. Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite storybook character. Students may choose any character from a book they enjoy following the guidelines in this letter. To support students’ feelings of safety and security in our building, violent or frightening costumes are not acceptable. No weapons or dangerous-looking items will be permitted to accompany a costume. Also, no decorative face covering/masks will be allowed BUT OF COURSE ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF WILL CONTINUE TO ABIDE BY OUR DISTRICT MASK PROTOCOLS.
Here are some examples of acceptable costume choices, and some examples of unacceptable choices:
Acceptable Examples
Fancy Nancy, Cinderella, Snow White, etc., The Wimpy Kid, Ramona, Superman, Spiderman, Ms. Frizzle, Babymouse, Bone, Olivia, Junie B. Jones, Nate the Great, Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron, etc.
Unacceptable Examples
Characters from Goosebumps, Vampires, Grim Reaper, Characters with guns or weapons, Witches, Ghosts or Goblins, Horror movie characters, Captain Underpants (inappropriate for school), Fake blood
We also had some trouble with the blow up costumes (dinosaurs) so please no blow up costumes this year.
You do NOT have to buy anything new for this event. Instead, be creative – make paper ears, a hat, or wear the clothes the character would wear. Children should either carry the book or make a large name tag stating the title of the book they are representing. Children should come to school dressed as the storybook character, and should be able to go to the bathroom independently while in character. The 29th is an early release day so students may want to stay in costume for the entire day, however, students will be given an opportunity to change before going home if needed. Students who do not wish to wear a costume may make signs or props representing a favorite book character. Please talk with your child about how he or she would like to participate in this event, and mark your calendars!
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher. Thank you for joining us as our NPE sharks work on practicing safety while having fun learning! We can’t wait to see all of your adorable characters around the school! Parents at home can take pictures and send them in to their Virtual teacher or post them on Twitter/Facebook. Remember to add #NPEFamily
The CDC Updates
For COVID-19, a close contact is anyone who was within six (6) feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes, with or without a mask.
The CDC advises school districts to “space seating/desks at least 6 feet apart when feasible.” While recognizing it is not possible to position all desks six (6) feet or more apart in all classrooms, CCPS is spacing students to the greatest extent possible. If a student is determined to be a close contact, he/she may need to quarantine at home for 14 days. If the student is feeling well enough during the quarantine period, he/she should participate in at-home learning by utilizing the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) through your child’s District-issued device.
WHAT CAN WE COLLECTIVELY DO TO MINIMIZE THE SPREAD OF COVID-19?
- Masks/face coverings and social distancing are the top ways to limit COVID-19 transmission (Source: FLDOH-Collier)
- If your child or another member of the household is symptomatic, please keep your child home to protect the school community (Student Health Screener)
- Please ensure your child follows health and safety protocols when out in the community and at home
- Continue supporting your child in wearing masks/face coverings and maintaining social distancing (six (6) feet or more) to the greatest extent possible in order to lower the risk of transmission
WHY DO WE WEAR MASKS/FACE COVERINGS?
The consistent wearing of masks/face coverings will ensure that fewer students would need to quarantine because of exposure to an individual infected with COVID-19.
Masks serve as a barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and on to other people when the person wearing the mask coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice. (Source: CDC)
We understand this is a challenging time with ever-evolving health-based information. Therefore, we appreciate your continued support as we navigate these changing conditions.
NPE Students Are JAW-some LEADERS!
We are now a Leader in Me school. Leader in Me teaches students how to be effective leaders through applying 7 Habits. Each month we will focus on a different Habit. During the month of October, we will focus on Habit 1: Be Proactive. It is the Habit of Personal Responsibility.
Here are somethings you can talk to your child about:
- discuss with your child the importance of taking a moment to think before reacting to a situation
- make a list of proactive words or phrases (I’m sorry, I can, I will get this done, We can do this together…)
- discuss with your child of the benefits and importance of focusing on things that are in their control

Keep Flu Out of School
The best way to protect your child and your family during influenza season is to: Get vaccinated.
Keep sick family members home from school or work.
Contact your healthcare provider if you or your children are experiencing flu-like symptoms (common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache).
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as much as possible.
Collier County Public Schools will NOT be offering school-based flu vaccine clinics this year. Please contact your child’s healthcare provider or the Collier County Health Department at 252-8595 for more information or to inquire about the availability of flu vaccine.

szared@collierschools
szared@collierschools.comAttendance for Virtual Learning
Parents, if your child is a virtual learner, please ensure they are logging into Webex by 8:25 am for their virtual instruction. Students must be interactive and present with their teachers all day to be marked present. If students do not return to their virtual classroom, for example after lunch or recess, they will be marked as “leave early.” If students are not logged in by 8:25 am, they will be marked tardy. We appreciate your support in marking sure your child is present in their virtual learning environment each and every day!
Fin-tastic News from Mrs. Serrano, our NPE Media Specialist
I’m so happy to say that every student, grades K-5, has been to the Media Center, at least twice already this year! Please remember that your child is visiting the Media Center every week, on their assigned day. If they don’t bring their book back, they will have to wait until the next week to get a new book.
We have lots of exciting reading programs happening this year!
Students in grades 2-5 are encouraged to read books, take Reading Counts tests, and earn points! As students earn points they will be celebrated by earning brag tags!
Students in grades 3-5 also have an opportunity to earn prizes by reading Sunshine State Young Reader Award (SSYRA) books. The SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation.
Happy Reading!
Mrs. Serrano

REMEMBER: THE CELL PHONE LAW IS STILL IN EFFECT!
A new state law made texting while driving a primary offense as of July 1, 2019. ... The second part of the law takes that a step further, making it illegal to use a handheld cell phone while driving in a designated school crossing, school zone or active work zone area.
**Please remember this includes the drop off and pick up lines. We want to make sure all of our students and staff are safe when loading and unloading each day.
