Shout Outs - Week of 2/17 - Submitted by RHS Staff Members
Our team has been working hard all year and I am so proud of them all, but I wanted to give a special shout out to Shari Maresh! Super proud of the work she has put in!
Cassie is a great lead teacher. Proud of her and even more proud of the leadership she has developed since I’ve been at RHS! Thank you for your hard work and relentless dedication to our students!
- To Cyndi Tucker who is always willing to help any teacher with anything. Cyndi is also our biggest cheerleader, whether its data, lessons, or scores, she knows how to make us feel good about our work. I see teachers from every subject collaborating with her because she's SPECTACULAR!
- To Lacee Estes for being super aware of our student population and needs from donating prom dress to her time to help dress-up the school with her Cricut. Our students are lucky that we added her to our RHS family.
There is ONE gift card remaining. Keep those shoutouts coming.

OCS INSTRUCTIONAL FRAMEWORK MODULE 3
Onslow County IF- Now What?
The Onslow County Instructional Framework (IF) is a county-wide initiative that outlines teacher responsibilities that promote student learning. It defines consistent expectations of what OCS teachers should know and do.
Each week, I’ll highlight different aspects of the IF to help everyone become familiar with the document and the common language used.
The IF has four columns.
In the first column we find the 4 DOMAINS- which can be remembered as PIAC-
· PLANNING
· INSTRUCTION
· ASSESSMENT
· CULTURE
The second column is made up of 11 CONCEPTS- these are broken down and relate to the DOMAINS.
PLANNING includes:
· STANDARDS ALIGNMENT
· LESSON DESIGN
· INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
INSTRUCTION includes:
· FOCUSED INSTRUCTION
· ENGAGEMENT
· PROGRESS MONITORING
ASSESSMENT includes:
· TEACHER REFLECTION
· STUDENT FEEDBACK
CULTURE includes:
· CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENTS
· CLASSROOM COMMUNITIES
· EQUITABLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
The third column lists 11 TEACHER ACTIONS related to each of the CONCEPTS.
The fourth column provides 35 EVIDENCES that outline the expectations for what teachers must do.
Tune in next week, when we take a closer look at the CONCEPT of STANDARDS ALIGNMENT in the PLANNING DOMAIN!

Guidance News
Teachers:
- Please be aware that we are awaiting finalization of semester grades. We will have to make necessary changes once that information is available as well as dealing with the the FF list.
- The next priority is enrolling new students...so please be patient with us as we have to hand make schedules so numbers might be off/classes might be full--until we get everyone in the computer!
- Schedule changes will only be made for the following reasons: they have ALREADY TAKEN THE CLASS or they are MISSING A CLASS! Please be sure to ask and make sure students haven't already taken your class! We had several last year that had already previously taken a class and we were in there again after the 10 day window! Be sure to send students with a missing class during that missing class period.
- Schedules change forms are located in guidance (salmon color paper), and have to have signatures from student, parent, and HR teacher! We also need the student's cell number if they have one--often times we call after school is over with. We have only made 100 copies of the schedule change forms--as we DO NOT HAVE ROOM TO MOVE PEOPLE! There are a lot of restrictions with our AP, AVID, and honors classes! It limits the flexibility in their schedules. 3rd and 4th periods are extremely limited full!
- Once a schedule change has been made, the students will receive a new schedule on yellow paper with a signature from guidance!
Attached is a copy of the Master Schedule to help students make course selections for schedule changes. Please have them give 3 options if possible.

OCS Weekly Update
Hello OCS family!
Read below for the latest updates from another great week at Onslow County Schools.
HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATION
As of today, Friday, Feb. 15, the 2019-2020 Secondary Course of Study is officially live on the OCS website.
This guide outlines the opportunities and coursework options available to high school students going into the 2019-2020 school year, including college-level courses provided in conjunction with Coastal Carolina Community College and advanced Career & Technical Education courses at the Eastern North Carolina Regional Skills Center.
BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION
This week is School Bus Driver Appreciation Week and we would like to thank our dedicated bus drivers and transportation staff for all of their hard work! Day in and day out, they work to get our students to and from school as safely and efficiently as possible.
On Monday morning, HMS Transporation Solutions sponsored a “Love the Bus Brunch” to thank OCS drivers who have won awards for Perfect Attendance, Outstanding Driver, and Clean Bus. They were treated to a spread of biscuits, juice, cake and more as a small token of appreciation.
To all of our drivers, bus monitors and transportation staff, we appreciate all you do for the children of Onslow County!
CTE HAPPENINGS
DID YOU KNOW? CTE prepares students to be college- and career-ready by providing core academic skills, employability skills and technical, job-specific skills.
As CTE Month continues, we are excited to keep you updated on career and technical education news across the county.
- This week marked an important occasion for our Future Farmers of America organizations at White Oak and Richlands high schools. FFA students and advisers from WOHS and RHS gathered at the OCS central office on Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the signing of an FFA proclamation by Interim Superintendent Ron Singletary. Dr. Singletary’s signature officially made February 16-23, 2019 FFA Week.
- Eighth graders at Dixon Middle got valuable career-readiness training Tuesday, as more than 15 business owners and professionals from the community came in and conducted mock job interviews. Students interviewed with professionals from many fields, such as law enforcement, military, medicine and retail, who asked them standard questions about their goals, strengths and weaknesses, as well as questions specific to their field. Interviewers were asked to grade students honestly to give the students accurate feedback on their confidence, preparedness, appearance and presentation. Leading up to the interviews, students learned about potential career paths, portfolio-building and budgeting. Instructor Alicia Dipzinski said the lessons learned from this experience will equip students for success as they go into high school, college and the workforce.
COMMUNITY LEADERS VISIT SCHOOLS
Each year, the Jacksonville-Onslow Chamber of Commerce hosts a group of leaders and professionals in the community for a leadership class, where they learn about the businesses and government agencies in the community. Thursday, this year’s class spent the day learning all about the opportunities Onslow County Schools provides for students.
The day started with a welcome from Interim Superintendent Dr. Ron Singletary and an overview of the school system from Deputy Superintendent Dr. Beth Folger.
From there, the class toured Thompson Early Childhood Center with Director James Lanier and even took a few minutes to read to the preschoolers. Later, the visitors stopped by Clyde Erwin Elementary to observe Spanish Language Immersion classrooms. For lunch, the class met with students from Onslow Early College High School and had a chance to network and talk about the OEC experience. They finished their day with CTE students learning about the variety of career and technical programs the district offers.
