Weekly Tech Update 12/7 to 12/11

Google Updates Sites and Jamboard, but not Classroom...yet

I keep watching for updates in Google Classroom that many of us(and others across the nation) have requested, but nothing newsworthy to report as of yet on Google Classroom. However, there have been some developments and updates in 2 other popular programs in the Google Workspace. Google Sites and Google Jamboard are getting an update.

Google Sites Update

Google Sites is undergoing an update. One of the more common complaints about Google Sites is the inability to have more control over customizing your text, styles, color, justification, etc. It appears that Google is finally giving us that ability. Schools that are enrolled in the Rapid Release domains will start receiving the update on December 1st. The Scheduled Release domains will start seeing the update on January 5th. I will keep checking and keep you updated when the update comes to our domain.

In addition to the update for text formatting, the themes in Google Sites will be getting an overhaul in early 2021 as well.

Google Jamboard Update

In Google Jamboard, you will finally be able to customize the background of your Jamboard. @GoogleforEDU tweeted out the update in the picture at right. This is a GAME CHANGER for those of us who use Jamboard! This now means that we can take our Google Slides, download them, and set them as a background on a Jamboard. This will allow us(and our students) to write on slides, move objects on top of those slides to make it more interactive, easily create and fill out graphic organizers, etc. The possibilities are endless. They are also teasing that the File Version History option is on its way as well.

Who Got Caught?

Has anyone noticed the new “I Caught” option on the Empower website? If you haven’t, head on over and check it out. The “I Caught…” form is courtesy of the Cyclone Learning Zone. I’m not going to spoil it, you’ll have to check it out. Here’s the link.

Math, Learning, Asynchronous, Turkey...Say What?

You have to check out how Christian Reynolds reviewed solving 1 step and 2 step equations with her ESL students. She used pixel art to let her students work asynchronously and solve algebraic problems. The students were able to see if they solved the problem correctly by typing their answer in the corresponding cell. I don’t want to give too much away, so you will have to check it out. It inspired me to find some more examples, see below.

Christmas Fun

My students always looked forward to class in December because they knew I would integrate different holiday puzzles, trivia, games, etc. with them. I wanted to take the old school worksheets and modernize them using different free tech tools. If you are interested in any of these activities, email me and I will be happy to share them with you. All the activities can be found in this book, made with Book Creator... another free tool.

#Remote Learning APP-vent Calendar

In the spirit of the holidays, the Hathaways have published the annual APP-vent calendar. This year they focused on apps that can be utilized in hybrid, remote, and asynchronous settings. Check the calendar each day to learn about a new app and how it can be utilized.

12 Days of Tech-mas

Check out this creation from Sara Hoffman. Sara delivers 12 days of tools, strategies, or activities that you can use in your classroom.

Tech Tool(s) of The WEEK

Teacher Made

Still looking for a way to get some of those worksheets, quizzes, activities, etc. to our students? Check out Teacher Made. Teacher Made is an online site that allows you to make any worksheet, ditto, quiz, gradable. Students do not need to log in with Google. You can set up a system to identify who turned in an assignment. Get in touch with me and we can talk about some of those ideas. You will see an example of a Teacher Made activity in the Christmas Activity book.

Pixel Art

Nikki Lavergne offers some more pixel art examples and a tutorial on how to construct pixel art.

Congratulations to the Winners of the Holiday Movie Trivia Challenge

Congratulations to Julie Signor and Ambur Misercola for winning the Holiday Movie Challenge. Well done ladies.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first month! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged
