Literacy Coach- Ms. Bridges
Literacy Coach Corner - Making the Most of Membean
Here are some tips for helping your student make the most of Membean, an online vocabulary program offered to students through their English classes. The program is tailored to a student’s personal vocabulary level, determined by an online diagnostic. While on the program, students engage with high-frequency words in a variety of ways, like videos, multiple-choice questions, word webs, and picture prompts. The settings can be adapted for students with special needs, also.
Membean is not intended to be completed in one 45 minute session. Students should work on it in 10-15 minutes spurts. For example, if a student is expected to complete 45 minutes of Membean a night, they could spend 15 minutes three times a week to get maximum benefits.
Although Membean is entirely online, some parents encourage their student to write down the words they are learning as they go. Then, they can ask students about the words they are learning and encourage engagement. Some good prompting questions for vocabulary words include:
What words mean the same thing as this word?
What is this word like? What is it not like?
Does the seem positive or negative? Why?
Have you seen it anywhere else besides Membean? Could you use it in a sentence?
Your student should avoid doing Membean on a phone or on a computer with other tabs open. This often results in what are called “dubious sessions” or miscalculation of minutes spent on Membean. Encouraging them to spend a brief, focused time on Membean is what’s best. If technology access is an issue, please contact your student’s English teacher.
