BULLDOG BRIEF

PERSONALIZED. INNOVATIVE. GLOBAL.

Start of the School Year

We have had a great start to the school year. We tried to make the first day one of the best we've ever had by really embracing our K-12 learning environment. Seniors worked with kindergarten students and each grade level had an opportunity to meet kids from the other part of the building. It really seemed to go well and we even had a couple of new Bulldogs make an appearance at our school-wide assembly. Thanks for letting us work with your kids!

Enrollment Nears 900

Enrollment is up again this year. Though we won't have the official count until October 1, it appears as if we will be up approximately 20-30 students served this year and be just under 900 students total served in grades TK-12. In the 2009-2010 school year, we had just over 600 students in grades K-12. The 2019-2020 enrollment numbers include adding 16 students to our transitional kindergarten program. Without that additional section, we would only be up about 10 kids in grades K-12. The school board has worked hard to manage enrollment growth by closing open enrollment in all grades but kindergarten which also has limitations for acceptance.

Open enrollment guidelines will be established later this school year for the 20-21 school year, but we will continue to focus on managing growth as effectively as possible. Enrollment is the foundation for school funding and is critical to providing small class sizes and quality programming for our district.

As many of you know, we will be adding preschool next year to our district. We are one of only six districts in Iowa that does not run its own preschool program. The addition of a preschool program will have an impact on classroom space and will likely push our total enrollment served to over 900 students, but is something our community needs to best serve our students and families.

Enrollment growth can present challenges for school districts, but it is a welcomed challenge in Van Meter CSD as 2 out of 3 school districts in Iowa are seeing significant declines in student enrollment. We are excited about what the future holds for our community! If you have questions about enrollment or open enrollment, please contact superintendent Deron Durflinger at deron.durflinger@vmbulldogs.com.

Football Friday Nights

Football season is upon us. We love Friday Night Football in Van Meter. We had a great crowd vs Earlham in Week 1 and we appreciate the support. We want to remind fans that young students and kids should be supervised by their parents in areas that allow all fans to enjoy the game.

Some reminders to Van Meter Students:

  • Footballs should not be brought to the game
  • Elementary students are encouraged to watch the game either with their parents or at the north end of the bleachers.
  • Middle school students should be with their parents or in the student section and not congregating on the grassy hill.
  • High school students should watch the game from the student section.

We love the big crowds, but we all need to do our part to make it an enjoyable experience for every fan.
