Riverside Community Connection
March 5th Edition
Food Drive at Hy-Vee with Mayo and Riverside
One of the most beautiful things occurred last week, Saturday, February 26th.
Mayo High School Key Club students and Riverside students and staff partnered with Hy-Vee in Barlow Plaza for a few hours with the goal of restocking our resource rooms with a few basic food and hygiene items. Students engaged with customers as they entered the store and handed each person a short list of the items most needed (e.g. shampoo, laundry detergent, canned food, etc.). The students gave a brief overview to each person of why they were asking.
As the minutes and hours unfolded, it became clear that we would fulfill our original goal of restocking our spaces. But even more special was the impact that this experience seemed to have on every person who chose to share this journey with our students that day.
On that sunny Saturday afternoon, we saw students advocating for students and their schools, our community supporting its community, customers giving as much or as little as they could and best of all, we saw our students realize the power their voices hold.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
