Week of December 16, 2019
Weekly Update
Dear Sorrick Families,
Thank you to those of you who volunteered your time at our annual Holiday Shop this past week, and a special thank you to our PTA board for coordinating such a wonderful event. The students were thrilled to have had a chance to buy some gifts for the special people in their lives!
We have an exciting week ahead of us at Sorrick School. On Tuesday, December 17th, the Conrady band will visit us for their annual "Hark the Halls" performance. All students will listen as the band fills the hall with holiday favorites.
On Thursday, December 19th, classes that earned at least 10 team tickets will have the chance to participate in the PBIS Polar Express party. Students will watch the movie the Polar Express and drink some delicious hot cocoa (made with water and without marshmallows). If you do not want your child to participate, please contact your child's teacher before Thursday.
On Friday, December 20th, all classes will enjoy winter parties in the classroom. The students will be provided with snacks and drinks, including cheese pizza from Durbin's, apple juice and individually-wrapped apple slices from McDonald's. If your child cannot eat any of the items being offered, please contact your child's teacher by Wednesday. You may also send an alternative snack for your child only. Just a reminder, if you plan to volunteer in the classroom, your ID must already be on file in the front office.
Just a reminder, school will be closed Monday, December 23rd - Monday, January 6th for winter break. School will resume for students on Tuesday, January 7th. On behalf of the Sorrick staff, we wish you all a very Happy New Year! Enjoy the extra time off to relax and celebrate with your families.
Warmly,
Natalie Profita

Sorrick School is Seeking your Feedback!
5Essentials Survey
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides an opportunity for parents, students, and staff to share specific information about their school. The survey information is part of the school report card. In NPD117, we use this information in our continuous improvement process.
If you have children attending more than one school, we ask that you complete the survey for each school. The parent survey is available in both English and Spanish, and only takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. This survey will be available until February 14, 2020.
To take this short survey:
- Visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/
- Type and select “Cook” as "County."
- Type your child’s school name into the "School" field and select your school.
Thank you in advance for your input!
SEL Featured Family Resources
Dealing with peer pressure is part of growing up. Young children are often easily influenced by others, and need our support in order to effectively make the right choices when faced with negative peer influences. Here are some resources to help you discuss peer pressure with your child:
- 6 Steps to Helping Your Child Deal with Peer Pressure
- Teaching ways to deal with peer pressure through children's literature:
A Bad Case of Stripes, by David Shannon - Kids will learn what happens when lima-bean-loving Camilla Cream allows others to change her rather than enjoy her favorite food.
Chrysanthemum, by Kevin Henkes - A little mouse is proud of her flowery name, until her classmates' mocking becomes a thorn in her side. Luckily, their favorite teacher has a secret that will return her self-confidence.
Riding the Tiger, by Eve Bunting - Danny thinks that he has gained the respect of his new town when he hitches a ride on the back of a tiger. But he realizes the truth in this allegory about following the wrong crowd.
One of Us, by Peggy Moss - Looking for a group to join, Roberta James thinks that unless she totally conforms she'll never belong. But then she encounters a group that values being individuals.
