Self Assessment as Formative Assessment
This month's newsletter continues our focus on Formative Assessment. Specifically, we look at how student self-assessment advances the overall formative assessment process in our classrooms. We will also look at the role of "Success Criteria" in helping our students self-assess.
Do you have a great student self-assessment strategy? Share it with your instructional coach (maybe even let us take a picture or video clip in your classroom). We'd love to feature you in an upcoming newsletter!
Signal Cards
Signal Cards are a self-assessment tool that empower students to evaluate their progress towards the learning goal. "Green" might indicate they are confident and can teach a classmate; yellow could mean they are mostly there but may have a question, and red can mean "help, please." Check out the photos and links below to see how BCS teachers are using signal cards this month.
Signal Cards with Success Criteria
Math students in Alan Wilson's class (TCRHS) write color-coded "success criteria." During class, they self check & choose the matching card, providing immediate data for the teacher.
Signal Cards with Evidence
Lisa Stamey's history students (TCRHS) self-evaluate authentically by providing evidence for the color of signal card they select.
Signal Cards as Exit Slips
Once students evaluate their comprehension, they can set personal goals or establish "next steps." Teachers might use this data to place students in differentiated groups.
Signal Card Video
In this video, Buncombe County Schools math teacher Alan Wilson leads students through unpacking the target, establishing success criteria, and self-evaluating using signal cards.

BCS Teachers Use "Success Criteria"
Leigh Armistead's ACRHS Broadcast Journalism students help create success criteria for each level of learning target mastery.
Laura Hutchinson's ACRHS English I students use this set of success criteria to self evaluate rigorous literary analysis.
Both students and teacher in Megan Sander's TCRHS chemistry class use this rubric to assess lab reports.
How Else Can Our Students Self-Assess?
On recent learning walks at ACRHS and TCRHS, host teachers modeled numerous strategies for student self-assessment. See the image below for a list.
