Excellent Leaders Modeling Success
Does your child need extra help in school?
Starting the first week in February, East Lee Middle School will be offering several opportunities for students to receive additional academic support.
Project P.A.S.S -- Preparing All Students for Success with Ms. Slease
Project P.A.S.S will be an after school study time for students. Ms. Slease will work with students on staying focused and completing assignments as needed to be successful. Project P.A.S.S will require a P.A.S.S form from the teacher to administration. The admin team will then assign Project P.A.S.S time for at least one of the two weekly sessions. Sessions will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays until 4:00.
Rocket Learning After school
Rocket Learning After school Math and Reading Tutoring will once again be on Tuesdays and Thursdays this year. Reading and Math teachers have already nominated students to participate and Rocket Learning is slated to begin in February. Rocket Learning will run weekly from 3:00-4:00 with snacks and transportation provided. Students will complete work in the Ready EOG books for Reading or Math.
Supreme Science
This year we are offering an after school opportunity to our 8th Graders for Science. About 30 Students will have the opportunity to participate in a distance learning science class with hands-on, interactive science activities. Ms. Groh and Mrs. Groves will facilitate on Tuesdays with the distance learning teacher from Discovery Center (http://www.discoverycenter.org/pages/distance_learning) and on Thursdays provide a follow-up to the activity and work on preparing the students for the Science EOG.
Ace it! In School Tutoring

Do you use exit tickets?
Currently in Ms. Brown's class, students use the program after they have learned the material. The website they are using is called exittix.com. Ms. Brown pre-creates exit tickets that the students will answer without using their notes, so that she can get a snapshot of what they can do.
Each day, when it's time for the exit ticket, Ms. Brown logs into the website and clicks Start; it then shows up on their screen. She has it set up to show the students if they got each question right or wrong and the correct answer. Ms. Brown does not set time limits for her students when using the program.
Ms. Brown sets up the exit tickets so that she addresses the format of each type of question (true/false, multiple choice, and open ended). Students usually finish in 1-3 minutes. One of the benefits of using the program is that it automatically updates the reports on her iPad (it also does this on a laptop and Lenovo tablet too).
This is a great tool for teachers and students. A BIG shout out to Ms. Brown for her innovative ways to engage and know what the students are learning.
Elective Curriculum Night
Mr. Wayne Bruton- Student Teacher
Wayne Bruton is originally from southern California and moved to North Carolina with my family when I was in the fifth grade.
This Spring he will be completing his 2nd semester internship at East Lee Middle School with Mr. Toth as part of my graduation requirements for East Carolina University and North Carolina licensure requirements. He will graduate from ECU on May 8th of this year with a degree in Special Education and will continue with his coursework through the end of June for his reading add-on.
During the past three years he has been working as a teacher’s assistant while completing practicum assignments and as an Intern at Greenwood Elementary School in the special education department. He has enjoyed his experiences in working with students in the K-5 environment and am now looking forward to the middle school experience.
Kickball Tournament
Mr. Baer's Strive group held a fundraiser on January 13th to raise funds for this community service project. Students raised over $150.00. There money will be used for the renovations to the soccer and football fields at East Lee. During the event, students participated in two games during the PAV Curriculum Night. The first game was a 6th grade vs. 6th grade game. They were only 4 points away in score. The second game was 7th grade vs. 8th Grade. Again this game was only a few points away from each other. Everyone had a great time!

IC3- Digital Literacy Certification
In today's high-tech world, digital literacy is a requirement. The best way to stand out in the crowd is to have the Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³) credential on your resume.
Every job and career, every field of study, and even our social and personal lives are increasingly impacted by technology. The Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³®) certification helps teachers prepare students to enter the next phase of life, whether it is in the workforce or in high-education.
Currently, East Lee Middle School has 40 students taking IC³ for the 2014-2015 school year.
For both the student and the job-seeker IC³ provides the foundation of knowledge needed for success, and it is a well-respected and internationally-recognized credential that reflects the most relevant skills needed in today's academic and business environments.
Regardless of your career or education goals, computers and technology will most likely play and important role. To make sure you are prepared for success, get the most up-to-date and globally recognized digital literacy certification available, IC³.
Benefits of IC³ Certification
- Validate the digital literacy skills required in today’s academic and work environments
- Recognized globally as the standard for digital literacy
- Establishes a strong foundation for additional certification

Teacher of the Month
"Matt Martin is the coolest cat East Lee has ever seen. He has top-notch taste in fashion, he entertains the masses with his swinging jazz tunes, and he has taught me how to spice up my dialogue with special "sentence enhancers." Matt Martin is my inspiration. :)"
Career Day
The counselors at East Lee Middle School are in the process of planning Career Day which will be held at East Lee on Friday, March 6, 2015 from 8:00-11:00am. With a district-wide push to promote college and career readiness, Career Day serves as an opportunity to expose students to an array of careers that will be available to them upon graduation. Career Day presentations also help students become more aware of how their daily school experiences and the topics covered in class help prepare them for their future.
In order for this event to happen, we need the help of approximately 50 community members who are willing to share the ins-and-outs of their career with our students. If you know of someone who may be interested in participating in our Career Day event, please have them contact Mrs. Harris or Mrs. Brown.
