March 2
Greetings, Mize Families!
I hope you all had the opportunity to get out and enjoy the nice weather over the weekend! I don’t know about you, but it certainly made me anxious for spring!
This week we are looking forward to several fun-filled activities. On Thursday, we will be hosting Body Venture, which is an interactive exhibit where students explore the different systems within the human body. We will also have a program brought to us by our wonderful PTO entitled, Ming Lee and the Magic Tree. In addition, our fifth graders will be traveling to Mill Creek Middle School to enjoy their musical. This should be a great week of learning fun!
Finally, I sent out a message, on Friday, concerning illness here at Mize. As a reminder, please keep your child home if they are having any symptoms of illness. With this, please refrain from giving your child temperature controlling medications before sending them to school. Often times, this controls the temperature, but allows for transmission of illness to other students. Thank you for helping us keep all of our precious Hawks healthy and for your continued support here at Mize.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Ms. Balthazor

Kindergarten Round Up is March 24 at 5:30 pm
We are thrilled to have your child join us for Kindergarten Roundup in USD 232! Going to Kindergarten is an exciting time for not only the child, but the parents as well.
Your first step is Kindergarten Roundup
Make plans to attend Kindergarten Roundup and Parent Information Night in March 2020. Parents will have the opportunity to begin the enrollment process, ask questions, and meet the principal. Parents will also learn about Before/After School Care and Extended Care offered through a partnership with Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department. By Kansas statute, children must be the age of five (5) on or before August 31 to be eligible for Kindergarten enrollment.
What will you need?
Parents are encouraged to bring the following information to Kindergarten Round-Up:
- Certified copy of child's birth certificate (required by Kansas statute)
- Copy of immunization records (from pediatrician)
- Proof of residency (copy of current utility bill, contract, etc.)
Nurse Notes
I have lots of parents ask, “Why the five-day exclusion policy, our doctor just says, 24-hours fever free?” The Answer, viral shedding! Viral shedding is the period of time when you are contagious and able to infect others. Peak viral shedding occurs during the fever stage of an illness, but you can still be contagious after the fever has subsided. The CDC recommends the period of exclusion for influenza be 5-7 days. The Kansas Health Department has taken that recommendation and mandated a five-day exclusion policy starting from the first day of symptoms. Students and staff must also be fever free for a minimum of 24-hours without the use of fever reducing medications like Tylenol and Ibuprofen.
- Viral shedding in influenza A virus infections peaked on the first 1 to 2 days of symptomatic illness. By day 6 or 7, viral shedding had gradually decreased to undetectable levels.
- Patients who contracted influenza B exhibited peak viral shedding up to 2 days before symptom onset. Shedding then declined and peaked again at day 3 to 5, and then persisted over 6 to 7 days.

New Fundraiser for the Art Room!
For the past four years, we’ve teamed up with Artome during Fine Arts Night to present student artwork matted and framed. Our families have had the opportunity to purchase the framed artwork and the money made was used to supplement the art program. This year, however, we’re trying something new. There will be no artwork for sale during Fine Arts Night. Instead, students are creating artwork that can be printed onto greeting cards through My Cards. Your student will be coming home the first week of March with an envelope that holds the student’s design. Simply follow the four easy instructions on the envelope. There is no obligation to purchase the cards. Simply either mark the YES or NO box. If you decide to purchase, please enclose the payment when sending the envelope back to school. ALL ENVELOPES MUST BE RETURNED TO THE SCHOOL REGARDLESS IF YOU PURCHASE CARDS OR NOT. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Souders, art educator, at ssouders@usd232.org. Thanks in advance for your support.
Save the Date! Fine Arts Night Thursday, April 23, 5:00–7:00 pm
Mize’s 5th annual Fine Arts Night will be here before we know it! Students are already starting to prepare artwork and work on music. More information about the evening will be announced as we get closer to the date. One change for this year: there will be no framed artwork for sale this year. Information to come soon about a new art department fundraiser. Stay tuned! If you should have any questions about Fine Arts Night, please contact Mrs. Souders (ssouders@usd232.org) or Mrs. Taber (ktaber@usd232.org) .
