ELA News and Updates

In ELA this week, we started our first in-class novel, Freak the Mighty. Each student has a copy of the book which they need to bring to class every day. They also have comprehension questions that go along with the book. I love this book!

6th graders also have spelling every week. They take a pretest on Monday and have a spelling packet where they practice spelling the words. The packets are due on Wednesday. Then they take the words they misspelled on Monday on Friday. For example, if they spelled three words incorrectly on Monday’s pretest, then they would have to study those three words for Friday’s test.

We will be going over different grammar lessons throughout the year. This week we focused on nouns. They took a quiz on nouns on Friday. Those grades will be in the gradebook some time next week.

They also finished and shared a narrative they wrote about their summer with their classmates. Sounds like everyone had a wonderful time this summer!

Math News and Updates

Amanda Lois amanda.lois@yorkville.k12.wi.us

This week in sixth grade Math, we finished up work on Module 2: Finding the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) and Least Common Multiple (LCM) and using them in real world situations. We also applied the GCF to the distributive property. The sixth graders reviewed Module 2 on Monday and took the Module 2 Quiz on Tuesday. Then we moved on to Module 3: Rational numbers. We ended the week with Math Workshop station rotations practicing classifying rational numbers!

Each morning students start the class by working through a “Math Minute.” These are 10 questions involving many different aspects of the sixth grade math curriculum. The students work through them on their own and then they correct their own answers as we discuss them as a large group. On Fridays, they take “Make Minute Quizzes” which are questions that come directly from the Math Minutes completed during the week. These weekly quizzes will be graded and put into the grade book.

Next week we will continue with Module 3, comparing and ordering rational numbers, as well as finding the opposite and absolute value of rational numbers. We will finish next week with a quiz on Module 3.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Lois

Science News

Sixth grade science is off to a great start! We spent some time learning about what all earth science entails. The students got a chance to practice researching a topic and presenting to classmates as well. We spent this week discussing the Scientific Method and the students were given a “problem” to use to work through the steps. They caught on very quickly and I look forward to our 1st lab where they can use the Scientific Method to help prove their hypotheses right or wrong. Enjoy the weekend!

Social Studies News

Mary Niccolai

Sixth grade social studies is off to a great start. We spent the first few weeks of school learning how to access the social studies book on their Chromebook and learning how to use Google Documents. We also addressed email and accessing the homework calendar along with their Google drive. We have also explored the website quizlet. Every student made an account and now has an easy way to work on chapter vocabulary for any class.

We began with chapter 1 where we looked at the qualities that define a civilization. We also spent time investigating some of the Ancient civilizations of North America, including the Olmec, Mayan, Incan, and Aztec civilizations.

Chapter 2 introduces the early explorers. We are looking the the voyages of Dias, De Gama, Columbus, Vespucci, and Cabral. We will continue chapter 2 next week we will continue to look at Spain in America and the competition for colonies.

Please check skyward for updated grades and to check for absent or late work. Please let the office know if you are having trouble accessing Skyward. They will be able to assist you. Have a great weekend!
