What do you have the audacity to believe?
“I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.”
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In this excerpt from his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in Oslo, Norway in 1964, Dr. King identified some basic tenets that a lot of us possibly view as a given and might even take for granted; however, as members of the school community, we have the audacity to believe in these things as well. The structures are in place all around us that demonstrate our commitment to exactly what Dr. King is talking about. Three meals a day...schools offer breakfast, lunch, and most of the time after school sustenance of some type. Additionally, I have seen multiple school employees go out of their way to provide food for our students when they need it. Education and culture for their minds...we are in the business of educating on multiple levels in multiple content areas while at the same time establishing a culture that has the unique combination of caring coupled with high expectations. Dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits...without fail, a common theme that is present in our classrooms is the concept of teaching our students to think, rather than what to think. We provide them the opportunities to set personal learning goals, determine their level of learning within each area, the means with which to express themselves in a safe, supportive environment all the while guiding them with the underlying motif of rigor and the overarching idea of treating them with dignity and respect...and for that, I thank you!
