From the Principal's Pen
October 12, 2018
THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS!
Our Julian Curtiss Open House was so much fun! Mrs. Brush and I enjoyed the opportunity to see so many parents and family members come out to support the students and the school. We were so happy so many families made time to meet our specialists and essentialists (music, art, PE, foreign language, library media, reading, ESL and special education) in addition to their child’s homeroom. Thank you for finding time in your busy schedules to attend this event. The support and involvement of families is greatly appreciated by the teachers and staff and it’s the number one thing parents can do for their children’s education. We are so fortunate to work with such a supportive community!
Many thanks to our generous PTA for providing dinner for our teachers - it was greatly appreciated!
“Parents, families, educators and communities—there’s no better partnership to assure that all students pre-K- to high school—have the support and resources they need to succeed in school and in life.”

Internet Safety Workshop
It has come to my attention that many of our young students are on social media and playing multiplayer online games. It is so very important that you know how this impacts your child and his/her safety.
Central Middle School will be hosting an Internet/Technology Safety Parent Workshop with Guest Speaker Katie Greer on Tuesday, October 30th
from 7:00 - 8:30 pm in the CMS Auditorium.
Katie LeClerc Greer is the former Internet Safety Program Coordinator for the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, and former Intelligence Analyst for the Massachusetts State Police, where she was assigned to the Missing Children Clearinghouse. Her nationally recognized Internet/technology safety programs have been delivered to thousands of students, parents, school staff and law enforcement agencies around the country and have been featured in USA Today, Vanity Fair Magazine and on CNN.
If your child is on social media or plays games like Fortnite please attend this event.

DEVICE FREE EVENING
JC is Unplugging!
As part of our K-5 digital citizenship work, students are taught that it is important to balance screen time with other activities.
Please join us in celebrating this balanced approach with a #DeviceFreeDinner. JC teachers will not send home iPads or assign any homework that requires the use of a device on Wednesday October 17th, 2018. Please refrain from allowing your child(ren) any screen time on this day, and remember, on all other days there is no substitute for actively monitoring your child's use of technology. Thank you!

SOCKTOBER
Each night in the United States, an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. This October, we want to show that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.
During the month of October, the Julian Curtiss Service Club will be collecting new socks of all sizes (infant, child, and adult) to be given to local homeless shelters.
There will be a collection box at the end of the front hallway outside the gym until Friday, October 26th.
Tell your friends and family - every pair helps!
