Starting next week, all 4th- and 5th-graders will take the state test, the Smarter Balanced Assessment, in English/Language Arts and Math:

  • Fall state testing is happening because last year's spring state tests were cancelled.
  • Fall state tests will be shorter than normal.
  • Fall state tests will be based on last year's grade level (for example, 4th-graders will take a test based on 3rd-grade standards) to measure last year's progress.

Here are the dates for this fall's Smarter Balanced Assessment:

  • October 20-21: English/Language Arts
  • October 27-28: Math

Please help by encouraging your child to try their best, to attend school on those 4 days, and to get a good night's sleep. Click here to access practice materials—no login needed. Contact your child's teacher on ParentSquare or call 573-1700 if you'd like more information.

This year, we've asked you to keep your child home with a runny nose or a cough that would have been no big deal in the past. We know that attendance has been complicated this year—especially for families. We truly appreciate your help!

Since we started the year with so many (necessary) absences, we need your help.

Absences add up for students and can make learning difficult.

  • Starting in kindergarten, absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing just a 1-2 days of school each month delays reading and math skills.

Between now and Winter Break, let's make a push for strong attendance whenever possible.

  • Make sure your child is at school EVERY DAY unless quarantined or having COVID symptoms.
  • If quarantined and symptom-free, get a free COVID test after 5 days to return to school faster.
  • If your child has to miss, send a ParentSquare message to the teacher to learn about make-up work.
  • Schedule appointments after 3 pm.

Please call 573-1700 if you have attendance questions or needs. Thanks!

Big picture
Today, the schools of the Yakima School District—including Roosevelt Elementary School and our neighborhood—rest on the ancestral lands of the fourteen Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation. The people of Yakama Nation inhabited more than 12 million acres across Adams, Benton, Chelan, Douglas, Franklin, Grant, Kittitas, Klickitat, and Yakima counties. Today, we honor those native peoples who are tied to the land through history, legends, and culture. We acknowledge their descendants who live in the world today.

We thank the caretakers of this land, who have lived here and continue to live here since time immemorial. An acknowledgment is a simple, powerful way to show respect, and a step toward correcting the stories and practices that erase Indigenous people’s history and culture. It also honors the truth. As a school district, we will continue to build upon our relations with the Yakama Nation.

Starting SOON at Roosevelt, your child can be tested for COVID-19 at no cost each week!

  • Every Thursday from 11 am - 12 pm, trained professionals from the Premier Medical Group will conduct the testing using the rapid antigen test.
  • The rapid antigen test is a shallow nasal swab
  • Results are texted to parents in 15 minutes.
  • Testing is optional and requires parent registration. Click here to register your child.
  • Do not come to school sick to be tested. If you're sick and need a COVID test, go to the YSD Student Family Center Testing Site (105 N. 4th Ave on Mondays - Fridays from 1:00 - 5:00 pm).
Congratulations to Mrs. Mason, our exceptional Roosevelt counselor! Mrs. Mason was awarded our staff rotating award, the Spirit of the Bear Award, for the week of October 11.

Here's what colleague Mrs. Cheryl Tucker wrote when nominating Mrs. Mason:

  • I am very happy to pass the Bear Award on to our fantastic counselor Lupita Mason. She always has a smile on her face. Mrs. Mason is such a dedicated person to our students here at Roosevelt. She spends countless extra hours working with kiddos families and the Yakima community. She is an amazing person. Thanks for all the help this year supporting students in our gym before school!

Thanks Mrs. Mason for living out the Spirit of the Bear with our staff, students, and families every day!
