SAINT CONNECT
Join Saint Connect: Mentorship matters
Have you ever heard of mentorship? We’re sure you have, but maybe you’ve never thought of it for yourself.
What if you were able to ask someone in your field of interest any question about their career? How would you feel having someone cheer you on through the stress of the job search or internship process? What if someone was walking side by side with you as you entered into your first job beyond graduation, so you didn’t go it alone?
One of our favourite opportunities in Saint Connect is the opportunity to find a mentor – typically an alumnae or parent who has an interest in helping you navigate the ever-changing nature of your future career.
Afterall, the only way we move forward is together.
The importance of mentoring
Before we begin, let us tell you a story.
Elspeth Boynton (Junior Semester Abroad, 2010) recently joined Saint Connect and offered her time to be a mentor. Elspeth is Co-founder and Executive Director at diiVe, a company offering students an alternative learning environment that develops their capability to build their wider impact and lead in a more interconnected, complex, digital world.
Elspeth shared her thoughts on the importance of mentoring:
“Mentorship is something that has the potential to change the course of a person’s future direction and spur exponential personal and professional development. Mentoring is about continuous learning and, if you find, the right mentor early on in your career, or even before you graduate from university, the level of fulfillment you gain and actualization of your own individual purpose in your work is realized. I only wish I had started a formal mentorship programme when I was younger. That is why I mentor. I work with university students and recent graduates at St Andrews and to support young people on their personal journeys in discovering their own “reason for being” and to ensure they find work that aligns to that purpose. I also run global leadership programme for university students that exists to give young people agency and direction in a fast-moving, uncertain world.”
Sounds like Elspeth is ready to meet you, as are so many others already waiting to connect with you right now on Saint Connect.
So, if you haven’t already…
- Head over to Saint Connect and build a profile.
- Once you’re there, look to the left side of your screen, where you’ll see “Mentoring.” In the dropdown menu, you’ll see “Find a Mentor.”
- You’ll have countless criteria to search for a mentor there, whether that is by location or industry or company.
Mentorship matters and we hope that today, you’ll be able to find you community and your mentor as you prepare for what’s next.
