This Week's Theme: GENERATING IDEAS
Coming up with original, valuable ideas can be tough at times. What do you do when you run into an idea drought?
There are three phases for generating and implementing ideas:
- Ideation
This phase includes coming up with a list of possibilities. It is usually a good idea to identify the problem or requirement. What needs to be accomplished? Come up with a list of possibilities! This phase is focused on divergent thinking, coming up with as many ideas as possible. - Selection
The selection phase requires you to know the criteria for which you are judging the ideas. What needs do you have? Choosing the most appropriate idea or combination of ideas will depend upon this. Selecting an idea requires convergent thinking in order to screen, select, evaluate, and refine ideas. - Implementation
After choosing the best idea or combination of ideas, you need to take action. This is the third phase. You need to make sure that you have appropriate people working on each part of the implementation; clearly define roles within the group.
Quite often, the Ideation phase can be the toughest. There are multiple techniques that you can use to come up with ideas. You've probably heard of a few of them: brainstorming, mind mapping, storyboarding, forced relationships, and collaboration. If you get stuck, choose one to try for yourself!
This week's video highlights one technique to alter something in order to come up with new ideas. It is called SCAMPER. Each letter stands for something different:
- S - Substitute
- C - Combine
- A - Adapt
- M - Modify
- P - Put to Other Use
- E - Eliminate
- R - Reverse
Check out the video to learn more about the SCAMPER technique!
