Classroom Needs

Thank you for all the glue sticks! We can still use a few more boxes of tissues and hand sanitizer.

Volunteer Appreciation April 19

The staff at Bryant and Pattengill would like to express their sincere gratitude for all you do throughout the year in supporting classrooms and students. All volunteers from Bryant and Pattengill are invited to attend on April 19 at 6:00 at Bryant. Whether you are a PTO board member, have helped in the classroom or at events, or chaperoned a field trip, we hope to see you there!

Fact Power!

Learning basic math facts makes it much easier to work complex problems in the future. During our current math unit we have been using doubles facts to solve "near doubles."

1 + 1 =

2 + 2 =

3 + 3 =

through 10+10

An example of a near double:

If you know 6+6=12, then you know 6+7=13

Also, it is important that your student knows all the combinations of 10.

1 + 9

2 + 8

3 + 7

4 + 6

5 + 5

If students know their tens, they are able to use the "make ten" strategy to solve other problems.

7 + 4 =

I know that 7 + 3 = 10, so 7 + 4 = 11

For students who have already mastered this strategy, we are moving on to "making 100."

Writer's Workshop

As we wrap up our How To books in the next few weeks, we'll begin exploring other types of nonfiction. Students will be looking closely at the common elements of informational books, and soon will choose their own topics to research and write about. We call this next project, writing an All About book. Your student may come home wondering and asking questions about his/her topic - most first graders end up researching animals. Please feel free to look up information online with your child, or check out a book from the library. Students can use facts gathered from home in their books.
