FROM THE LRC
National E-book Week - March 6-12, 2022
Michael Stern Hart is credited with the creation of the very first e-book on July 4, 1971 while an undergraduate at University of Illinois. After typing the Declaration of Independence into a Xerox Sigma V computer and discovering the file was too large to send it to everyone on his network. He then decided to upload it for users to download at their convenience, resulting in the creation of the first electronic book and the beginning of Project Gutenberg - a library of over 60,000 free e-books that is still an active ebook resource. Click here to explore ProjectGutenberg
In 2004, as e-books started to grow in popularity, Canadian author Rita Toews “thought of this holiday through her own experiences as an author as well as her assistance helping authors she knew write their memoirs and stories. After being approached by many friendly co-authors, she thought of e-books as an excellent way for these authors to get publicity and approached her local library to begin Read an Ebook Week in 2004. As e-books became popular, so did the holiday. Read more here at DaysOfTheYear
Fast forward to today and there are now numerous sources to help you enjoy reading e-books and audiobooks. You can read or listen to them for free from the St. Charles Library, purchase them online from any book retailer, or dowload free e-books at many online sources.
----------------
Our St. Charles North LRC Website provides easy access to e-books and audio books through the Axis 360 (Click the link to visit) reader app. This allows for books to be read, or listened to, from a desktop computer, iPads, and iPhone / Android cell phones.
